Improves security features. A password must be set initially.<br>\u2022Adds the ability to review the history of any changes made to the password, network information, or other settings.<br>*For more information, please refer to the &#8216;Setting a Password&#8217; section in the Advanced User Guide on cam.start.canon.<br>2. Enables firmware updates to be performed when the camera is connected to the internet and new firmware is made available on Canon servers.<br>3. Adds a function that simultaneously protects images when they are rated.<br>4. Adds the ability to use up to 8TB of CFexpress cards.<br>Note<br>&#8211; Cards larger than 8TB require low-level formatting by the camera.<br>&#8211; Cards larger than 8TB are treated as 8TB cards.<br>&#8211; Cards larger than 2TB cannot be used for firmware updating.<br>5. Adds to lower the image capture frame rate to help prevent overheating when connected to CR-A100 in extended remote shooting.<br>6. When transferring images with voice memos via FTP, the transfer order priority has now changed with voice memo (Wav) file being sent first followed by image file.<br>If a voice memo is added to an image queued for transfer, the image and voice memo are now sent last.<br>7. Fixes an issue in which Err70 may occur when repeatedly shooting in the &#8220;High-speed continuous shooting +&#8221; mode.<br>11. Fixes an issue in which image stabilization may stop working when using an EF lens.<br>12. Fixes an issue in which HDMI output may momentarily stop when [Screen Off] is activated in the Power Saving settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the camera&#8217;s firmware is already Version 1.9.0, it is not necessary to update the firmware.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Firmware Download<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can download the latest&nbsp;firmware from Canon\u2019s Support Sites:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usa.canon.com\/internet\/portal\/us\/home\/support\/details\/cameras\/eos-dslr-and-mirrorless-cameras\/mirrorless\/eos-r3?subtab=downloads-firmware\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">US<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canon-europe.com\/support\/consumer_products\/products\/cameras\/digital_slr\/eos-r3.html?type=firmware\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">Europe<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Make sure that you download the correct firmware for your computer (Windows or Mac).<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Update the Canon R3 Firmware<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Download the firmware update to your computer and unzip the file, this should provide you with a xxx.FIR file.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Mac computers it might mount the drive when you double click on the .dmg file, then you should see a link to the mounted drive in Finder or on your desktop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Copy the xxx.FIR over to the root directory of a memory card, then insert the card into your R3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you go any further make sure that you battery is fully charged. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now select the firmware update option from the R3&#8217;s setup menu.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/rfshooters.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/canon-r3-firmware-update-menu.png\" alt=\"Canon R3 Firmware Update Menu\" class=\"wp-image-2354\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Run the firmware update and make sure that you do not power off the R3 before the firmware update is complete. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Previous Firmware Versions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Improvements from previous firmware versions are always included in the latest firmware version. So even if you have missed a couple of firmware versions, you only ever need to install the latest version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Changes in Version 1.8.0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Firmware Version 1.8.0 incorporates the following enhancements and fixes:<br>1. Adds [Protect Images] and [Rating] during FTP Transfer.<br>2. Adds the ability to select [Wired] as a connection option when [Airplane mode] is set to [On].<br>3. The following issues have been fixed.<br>\u30003-1.Fixes an issue, in which when Wi-Fi is disconnected, Err 70 occurs.<br>\u30003-2.Fixes an issue, in which when shooting subjects that are smaller in the frame, the card access indicator blinks and operations can no longer be performed.<br>\u30003-3.Fixes an issue, in which while operating both the touch function on the LCD monitor and a customized button, and then performing shooting, operations can no longer be performed.<br>\u30003-4.Fixes an issue, in which when performing shooting in high-speed continuous shooting + mode with the [Highlight Tone Priority] option set to [ON], focus may not be achieved when certain ISO speed settings are used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Changes in Version 1.7.1<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Firmware Version 1.7.1 incorporates the following enhancements and fixes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Enables servo zooming to be remotely controlled from EOS Utility or Camera Connect when Power Zoom Adapter PZ-E2\/PZ-E2B is attached to a compatible lens.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enables up to 2 TB to be used on CFexpress cards larger than 2 TB.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fixes an issue that may cause the camera, in rare instances, to stop functioning when using GPS.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fixes an issue that may display Error Code 70 when performing anti-flicker shooting at a shutter speed of 1 second or higher.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enhances security for FTPS (File Transfer Protocol Security) connections.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fixes an issue in which Mobile File Transfer may not function when connecting the camera to an iPhone compatible with USB 3.0 and higher.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fixes an issue that, under specific circumstances, may prevent the image from being displayed in the viewfinder or on the screen causing the camera to stop operating, or Error Code 70 may be displayed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fixes minor issues.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>If the camera&#8217;s firmware is already Version 1.7.1, it is not necessary to update the firmware.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Changes in Version 1.6.0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Firmware Version 1.6.0 incorporates the following enhancements and fixes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Adds support for RF-S10-18mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM lens.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fixes an issue that may cause the camera, in rare instances, to experience a delayed restart after the camera has gone into Auto Power Off.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fixes minor issues.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Changes in Version 1.5.1<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Firmware Version 1.5.1 incorporates the following enhancements and fixes: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Adds the ability to register the focus position in the preset functions of the CR-A100 Camera Remote Application. When used with the Robotic Camera System CR-S700R, it helps the user to focus on the intended subject distance when shooting. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Adds the ability to erase voice memos added to images and to add voice memos to protected images. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Adds the ability to check the time in the viewfinder by pressing the Exposure\u3000Compensation\/Aperture button while looking through the viewfinder.\u3000\u3000 <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Adds enhanced security when transferring images via FTPS transfer. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fixes an issue, in which, after touchscreen operation, in rare circumstances, the camera operations cannot be performed, and even if the camera is operated, [BUSY] appears on the screen. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fixes an issue that, in rare instances, may result in the camera may not operating normally and having no viewfinder or screen display depending on the timing of operating the button and viewfinder activation sensor. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fixes minor issues. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Changes in Version 1.4.1<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Firmware Version 1.4.1 incorporates the following enhancements and fixes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Adds support for Speedlite EL-5. * The automatic light intensity adjustment of the AF-assist beam is not supported.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Adds [Register people priority] to the camera menu. Pre-registered people can now be detected and tracked with priority.** This feature may not operate if faces are too small to detect, in profile or turned at an angle or partially hidden; for scenes where the subject is moving; or due to certain shooting environments.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Adds [Save\/load comm. settings on card] to the camera menu. Network settings can now be transferred between cameras of the same model.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Adds [Panning Assist] to the camera menu. When a compatible lens is used for panning shots, image stabilization and subject blur correction are applied during the exposure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Improves the Auto White Balance (AWB) setting to reduce the time it takes for the AWB result to be reflected in the camera&#8217;s viewfinder&#8217;s display when looking through the viewfinder.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Adds Protect Images During [FTP Transfer] to the camera menu. Images transferred via FTP can now be automatically protected. The user can determine if images have already been transferred via FTP.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fixes an issue in which Error 70 may occur when using the camera with certain EF lenses after having updated the camera firmware to Version 1.4.0.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fixes an issue in which the original tracking performance of Servo AF cannot be attained depending on shooting conditions when performing high-speed continuous shooting using the electronic shutter after having updated the camera firmware to Version 1.4.0.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fixes minor issues.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Items 1-6, and 9 are changes of Version 1.4.0, and items 7 and 8 are additions of Version 1.4.1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the camera&#8217;s firmware is already Version 1.4.1, it is not necessary to update the firmware.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Changes in Version 1.3.0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Firmware Version 1.3.0 incorporates the following enhancements and fixes: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The [User Def.] on [Picture Style] can now be selected in the Cloud Raw image processing settings. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fixes minor issues. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Changes in Version 1.2.2<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Firmware Version 1.2.2 incorporates the following fixes: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fixes an issue that, in rare instances, displays an Error Code 70 when the camera is capturing small subjects. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fixes an issue that, in rare instances, may result in image files not being recorded properly when the battery is removed from the camera while the power switch is set to  or. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Changes in Version 1.2.1<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Firmware Version 1.2.1 incorporates the following enhancements and fixes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Adds the ability to set &#8220;Custom high speed continuous&#8221; to the Drive mode. It is possible to shoot from 2 to 50 images continuously at a speed of approximately 30 to 195 fps. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Adds the ability to select &#8220;FHD 239.76 fps\/200.00 fps&#8221; in &#8220;High frame rate.&#8221; <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1- Adds the ability for in camera &#8220;Depth compositing&#8221; during &#8220;Focus bracketing.&#8221; 2- Adds Focus bracketing and depth compositing with a flash (Speedlite EL-1). <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Adds the ability of time-lapse movie recording. Note that the time-lapse movie setting is retained even if the camera enters the Auto Power Off state before starting time-lapse movie recording. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Adds the ability of Cloud RAW processing functionality. RAW processing with the latest image processing technology is possible. This is a paid service that requires the purchase of a Canon Imaging App Service Plan, which will be available starting July 25, 2022. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Adds the ability to convert multiple HEIF images into multiple JPEG images.. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Adds the ability to set [Still Image Crop\/Aspect] to [Custom Controls]. The assigned button can be used to switch between crop and aspect ratio. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Adds the ability to crop and resize images during transfer to an FTP server. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>802.1X authentication\/WPA2-Enterprise now supports the PKCS#12 certificate format. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Adds an electronic shutter sound to be played when the mechanical shutter or electronic 1st-curtain is set. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enhances the performance of &#8220;Movie Digital IS&#8221;. It stabilizes the image when taking selfies or walking shots using a wide-angle lens. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Adds [Auto Power Off Temp.: Standard\/High] to the menu for still shooting. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fixes an issue, which displays Error Code 70 on the camera, that may occur, in rare instances, when the [Disp. performance] setting is set to [Smooth]. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fixes minor issues.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fixes an issue, in which, after having updated the camera to firmware Version 1.2.0, when performing the [Factory reset] operation, some shooting settings are not retained.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Changes in Version 1.2.0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Firmware Version 1.2.0 was short lived since it introduced a bug and was swiftly replaced by version 1.2.1. It incorporated the following enhancements and fixes along with the bug: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Adds the ability to set &#8220;Custom high speed continuous&#8221; to the Drive mode.
