Favorite Zoom
Pros
  • Sharp. Beautiful Colors. Nice Bokeh. Renders Nicely.
Cons
  • Cost. Weight.
I don't own this lens but did rent it to check it out. That might have been a mistake as I plan on buying it when I can scrap tighter enough funds.
It is heavy and cost an arm and a leg but I actually like heavy gear, guess I'm weird.
Im not great at writing gear reviews so will leave it at that.

More than a kit lens
Pros
  • sharp, fast and light
Cons
  • not the fastest lens
They all say this is just a kit lens. I disagree. The lens is fast to focus and renders beautifully.
If I could have only one lens to use, this would be it.
The zoom range for a walk around lens is pretty much all encompassing.
The only negative is that it an f4, not so fast, but with the IBIS in the R5 and the way it handles noise, no problem.

The concept of a "kit lens" with all that implies with an 'L' in its name is laughable. I suppose you can make the "kit lens" claim since you can buy the body and lens together in a "kit".

I use this lens all the time
RF100-500L
Pros
  • Superb Imagery
Cons
  • cost
I purchased the lens after I got the R5. Had to wait about 2 1/2 months for it but was worth it.
I mainly use it for Birds, Wildlife and Airplanes. Also good for landscapes.
Is far superior to the original 100-400L I owned. Did not have an opportunity to try the mkII version of that lens.
The only negative I have about that lens is the price and maybe that it is not a metal lens, but this might turn out not to be a problem.

Awesome capture Jim.
R5
Pros
  • frame rates, autofocus, ISO performance, image quality
Cons
  • battery life, Price
first let me say that I am not a professional. I am upgrading from the 5DmkIII.
I mainly shot nature photography with an emphasis on bird photography and with that being said the r5 is the best camera I have ever used.
Quick acquisition of subjects using animal eye detect. Fast frame rates insure getting usable images.
Image quality is top notch. The high megapixel count gives me the ability to crop in on on a far off subject with great results.
The R5 is also top for landscapes as well as most other types of photography.
The only real negative is battery life with is still ok but do carry extra batteries with you. And the price is kind of high from what I normally use but cheaper than the 1DXmk III which I was also considering.
