Not many days that have been condusive to macro this year, but maybe, just maybe, the corner will be turned in the coming weeks.
First jumper of 2024.
Paul.
A few taken today after temps of -7 degrees overnight.
Someone dumped a bike in the street just after midnight a couple of days ago! There are 2 images (#1 & #2) here for context in the spoiler, relating to images #3 and #4.
Paul.
Found my first globular springtail of 2024 today on the recycling bin. Just a Dicyrtomina saundersi but still nice to find. A good sized one though, perhaps 3mm long.

Thought I'd join the rest of you and seeing as it is a new year, add some new content. Hi again everyone (that knew me before - and know of me now).
These are in the shed today - I do have a healthy amount of cellar spiders living there, and they have been joined by a fair few mozzies as well...
I've never seen one before - which considering how large it was (maybe 2mm) you'd think they would be easy to find - but not for me. This one was on my recycling bin tonight...
Pseudoscorpions, also known as false scorpions or book scorpions, are small, scorpion-like arachnids belonging to the...
I love photographing spiders even false widows... :) - this one is a rabbit-hutch spider - Steatoda bipunctata. Often seen indoors and in animal pens, garages, sheds, etc. Loves eating woodlice!
Then there is one of my pet hates - Lithobius forficatus, most commonly known as the garden...
If a spider traps something at night when it's very dark they have to hope that whatever it is in the web is edible.
They might get it right, or might get it wrong...
Paul.
Two spiders out of the dozen or so that were on the fence last night.
First is a male rabbit hutch spider (Steatoda bipuncta - one of the false widows) and the other two are of a silver-sided sector female (Zygiella x-notata) making herself a meal of a midge.
Following those are couple of a...
A true capsid bug, a couple of flies that wouldn't pose properly, and the lovely Pholcus phalangioides in the shed, one of my resident cellar spiders...
Paul.
I actually felt dismayed as this sequence unfolded, but that's the way nature goes.
On a small piece of rock covered in moss, the "beast" waited patiently, and the "beauty" just didn't seem to notice her, and succumbed to the bigger hunter... Amaurobius sp. and Salticus scenicus...
This moth was flying around the garden attracted by the outside light no doubt but it was raining quite hard, and it dropped into a plant pot and ended up between the leaves and flowers.
Paul.
I said the tree was fruitful last night - these are more of the discoveries...
Ladybird prep, a caddis fly variant (Limnephilus flavicornis) and another sleeping tapered dronefly (Eristalis pertinax) and 2 different green lacewings.
Paul.
The apple tree was fruitful last night (more in other thread).
Here are the first few - a vapourer moth caterpillar, a golden tortix moth, and 2 spiders.
Paul.
