However the firmware is not country specific so you can still download firmware from the US and install it on a lens purchased in Europe and vice versa.

Third Party Canon RF Lenses

With restrictions on third-party lenses slowly lifting, we are starting to see companies like Sigma and Tamron bringing some of their autofocus lenses to the RF mount. Hopefully this list will grow overtime.

Sigma Lenses

Sigma is slowly introducing their excellent range of lenses to the RF-mount. We should hopefully see many lenses added to this list over the next few years.

Canon RF Lens FAQs

What does RF mean in Canon lenses?

When the Canon EOS system was introduced, the name stood for Electro-Optical System. As the EF mount was a fully electronic mount, EF stood for Electronic Focus. Canon’s project to develop the next generation of EOS cameras had the aim of “Reimagining optical excellence” and was codenamed Project R. This led to the official name of the EOS R System. For the lenses, a fusion of EF and R resulted in the name RF lenses.

Are RF lenses better?

Canon says that what makes RF lenses better than their EF counterparts is the shorter flange distance between the rear lens element and the sensor. This allows them to focus the light more accurately across the entire sensor resulting in sharper images. From comparisons carried out so far it does appear that RF lenses are slightly sharper than their EF counterparts.

Why are Canon RF lenses so expensive?

Canon RF lenses have taken years of research and development to achieve very high levels of optical performance whilst reducing size and weight at the same time, unfortunately this level of technology doesn’t come cheap. Canon lenses have never been the cheapest on the market either.

Can you use RF lenses on EF?

There is currently no adapter on the market that will allow you to use RF lenses on an EF-mount camera.

What cameras can use RF lenses?

Currently the only cameras that support RF lenses are the Canon R, RP, R1, R3, R5, R5II, R5C, R6, R6 II, R7, R8, R10, R50, R100 and Ra.

How many RF lenses are there?

There are currently 41 RF / RF-S lenses available from Canon, 19 primes and 22 zooms.

About Timothy Mayo

I love shooting wildlife the most but will happily point my camera at pretty much anything. I started RFShooters.com with my amazing sister Emma to share our own adventure with the Canon R Series. At present I own the R5 + RF 100-500 lens. I also run a similar site for Sony Alpha Shooters and also shoot with a Sony A1. I find new camera technology fascinating so I unfortunately suffer from a very bad case of GAS! You can follow me on Instagram if you wish! Although I don’t post as often as I should.

    Hi,
For the RF100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM, you state release firmware, is 1.0.3 the latest?
    Cant find it

Great list, thank you for your effort in keeping this list updated! One wish I have is if the list also included the date of the last update. That is what tells me whether I need to consider updating or not. The Canon support website is really clunky to navigate when you’re checking the latest firmware dates for, say, 8-10 lenses.

    Great list!

There is a TTArtisan 35mm f/1.4 Lens for Canon RF which is APS-C format… not sure if you missed this one.

Great site. This is my go-to source for checking to see if my RF lenses have up-to-date firmware, and I just updated one of my lenses because of it. Thanks. Since your replies to comments show that you are still keeping the site current, I’ll mention an obvious one: In your list of cameras that support RF lenses, you can add the R5 II.

For Canon RF Extenders, these two lenses are also supported:

    RF 400 f/2.8
    RF 600 f/4

Their website is inconsistent about mentioning this, but you can see it in the product listing for the lenses and in the support pages for the extenders. The product pages for the extenders is missing these two lenses. I talked to Canon CPS, and they confirmed support for these two RF super-teles.

    Thanks for your website.
