Canon R6 Mark II Announced

You are here: Home / News / Canon R6 Mark II Announced
Last updated: November 2, 2022 / Published: November 1, 2022 by Timothy Mayo - 1 Comment

Canon has announced the EOS R6 Mark II full-frame mirrorless camera with a 24MP sensor, adding an additional 4MP over the Mark I along with some new helpful features for photographers and video shooters.

The Canon RF 135mm f/1.8L IS USM and Canon Speedlite EL-5 have also been announced.

The key feature of the new R6 II is a new 24.2MP full-frame sensor, an increase of 4MP from the 20MP in the original R6. This certainly is not a big increase in resolution, but it does help the R6 II to match the resolution of other popular cameras.

The new sensor is designed and manufactured by Canon. However, despite the sensor being the same size and resolution as the R3’s sensor, it’s unfortunately neither a BSI (Back-Side Illuminated) nor a stacked sensor.

However, Canon does say that rolling shutter performance has been improved and it’s now capable of burst rates up to 40fps when using the electronic shutter, but this does drop the readout down to 12-bits.

Key Specs

  • 24.2MP CMOS sensor
  • 12 fps mechanical shutter (40 fps electronic shutter)
  • Built-in image stabilization rated to 8.0 stops
  • 4K/60p video (oversampled from 6K)
  • 6K ProRes Raw video with a compatible Atomos recorder
  • Raw burst mode with pre-capture
  • Moving subject HDR mode
  • 3.68M-dot EVF capable of up to 120 fps refresh (0.76x magnification)
  • 1.62M-dot, 3-inch rear touchscreen
  • Dual UHS-II SD card slots
  • 760 shot-per-charge battery rating (CIPA)

The front and rear of the R6 Mark II are very similar to the current R6, but if you look on top you’ll see that the power switch has been moved to the right and there’s now a stills/video switch on the left.

The joystick on the rear of the R6 is slightly concave, whereas the joystick on the R6 II is somewhat convex.

The R6 II also gets Canon’s new multi-function accessory shoe, which provides support for advanced strobes and microphones.

If you are already an R6 Shooter do you think this Mark II will tempt you to upgrade?

About Timothy Mayo

I love shooting wildlife the most but will happily point my camera at pretty much anything. I started RFShooters.com with my amazing sister Emma to share our own adventure with the Canon R Series. At present I own the R5 + RF 100-500 lens. I also run a similar site for Sony Alpha Shooters and also shoot with a Sony A1. I find new camera technology fascinating so I unfortunately suffer from a very bad case of GAS! You can follow me on Instagram if you wish! Although I don’t post as often as I should.

I don’t like Canon anymore. Doesn’t respect their clients. The R6 was launched just in 2020. All now is merchandise.
