The latest version of the firmware for the Canon EOS R is now version 1.8.0
What’s New in Firmware Version 1.8.0
Firmware Version 1.8.0 incorporates the following enhancements and fixes:
- Improves color balance when the RF50mm F1.8 STM lens is attached to the EOS R camera.
- Support has been added for the following lenses:
- RF70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM
- RF100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM
Firmware Download
You can download the latest firmware from your local Canon support website. The below links will take you to the correct page to download the firmware. Make sure that you download the correct firmware for your computer (Windows or Mac).
How to Install the Firmware
Updating the firmware for the Canon Ra is a very straight forward and painless process, especially compared to Sony firmware installs.
When you download the firmware it will include a PDF guide on how to install the firmware, you can also download this guide here.
There are two methods described in this guide, I’d recommend using the card reader in your camera.
Previous Firmware Versions
Improvements from previous firmware versions are always included in the latest firmware version. So even if you have missed a couple of firmware versions, you only ever need to install the latest version.
Changes in version 1.7.0
- Support has been added for the following lenses:
- RF600mm F11 IS STM
- RF800mm F11 IS STM
- EXTENDER RF 1.4x
- EXTENDER RF 2x
- The operation of playing back through the multi-function bar has been improved (Please refer to the latest version of the camera’s Instruction Manual that is released with the firmware update).
- Support for the Battery Pack LP-E6NH has been added.
Changes in version 1.6.0
- Support for the RF 85mm F1.2L USM DS lens has been added.
- Corrects a phenomenon in which the function or setting value assigned to the control ring may change when the control ring is operated in Eco mode.
- Corrects a phenomenon in which the camera may stop operating properly during “auto transfer” when using Camera Connect with a Wi-Fi connection.
- Corrects a phenomenon in which high-speed synchronization with use of an external flash may not operate properly depending on the camera’s setting for C.Fn2 “Set shutter speed range”.
Changes in version 1.4.0
- Enhances eye detection Auto Focus (AF) for improved face and eye recognition at greater distances.
- Improved Auto Focus (AF) performance helps the camera to focus on and track smaller subjects.
- Reduces lag time between the actual Auto Focus (AF) and the AF frame display for images in the viewfinder or on the LCD.
- Fixes a phenomenon in which the AF frame size cannot be changed in the Servo AF setting.
- Fixes PTP communication vulnerability.

- Support for the RF24-240mm F4-6.3 IS USM lens has been added.
Changes in version 1.2.0
- Eye-detection AF Supports Servo AF when shooting still images.
- Eye-detection AF Now available when shooting movies regardless of “Movie Servo AF” setting.
- Eye-detection AF Small AF Frame Size
- Eye-detection AF Now available when shooting movies regardless of “Movie Servo AF” setting.
- Fixed under certain conditions the electronic level displayed in the electronic viewfinder did not display properly.
Changes in version 1.1.0
- Support for “continuous shooting” is available when “silent shutter” has been enabled. *
- Corrects a phenomenon in which an error may occur if there is a large number of files in a specific format on the memory card.
- Corrects a phenomenon in which an error may occur when silent shutter has been enabled.
- Corrects a phenomenon in which horizontal linear noise may occur when using specific lenses together with certain recording image quality settings.
- Corrects a phenomenon in which the information displayed in the viewfinder may become abnormal.
* When using the continuous shooting option when silent shutter has been enabled with the RF24-105mm F4 L IS USM lens, it may be necessary to update the lens’ firmware version. If the lens’ firmware version is Version 1.1.1, please download the latest firmware version (Version 2.0.0) or later from Canon’s Web site to update the lens firmware.
