Screen Protectors
Adding a screen protector to your R7’s LCD display will help to protect it from scratches and knocks.
Rotating the R7’s LCD display inwards when not in use will also help to provide some additional screen protection.
There are not many screen protectors available for the R7 as yet, but I’ll add the better ones here as soon as I spot them.
Expert Shield Crystal Clear Screen Protector
Expert Shield is a trusted brand when it comes to screen protectors. Their Canon R7 Screen Protector uses an ultra-hard layer sandwiched within the protector to provide a deep level of protection.
It should stop sharper objects from penetrating through to your R7’s screen and the surface layer absorbs lighter scratches to keep your screen looking like new.

Memory Cards
The R7 has two memory card slots. Both slots support UHS-I and UHS-II SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards. You’ll find our top recommended UHS-II and UHS-I memory cards below.
For further memory cards please visit our Canon R7 Memory Card Guide where we have tested over 20 memory cards in the R7 to determine which perform the best in camera.
UHS-II Memory Cards
If you shoot a lot of continuous bursts and require the R7’s buffer to clear as quickly as possible, then you will want to use the fastest UHS-II cards.
Kingston Canvas React Plus UHS-II
Although not everyone is aware of Kingston, they have actually been in the memory business since 1987!
Their Kingston Canvas React Plus UHS-II are very well reviewed and extremely fast, and often out perform more expensive cards.
Their price per GB together with their performance and reliability makes this our number one recommendation for the R7.
- Bus speed: UHS-II
- Video speed class: V90
- Capacities: 32GB (SDHC), 64GB, 128GB, 256GB (SDXC)
- Read speed: 300 MB/s

UHS-I Memory Cards
If you don’t shoot a lot of continuous shots and don’t mind waiting around 3x longer for the images to copy over to your computer, then you’ll probably be fine with the slower UHS-I memory cards.
Delkin Devices Advantage UHS-I
Designed and supported in the USA, the Delkin Devices Advantage UHS-I memory card is protected against water, shock, and x-rays, and also features built-in error correction and wear leveling.
Each memory card is backed by a Lifetime Warranty and Delkin’s American-based customer support team.

Please visit our Canon R7 Memory Card Guide for a full list of supported memory cards and card readers.
Memory Card Readers
If you don’t have a UHS-II card reader in your computer then you’ll want to purchase an external reader if you want to take advantage of the faster transfer speeds.
Here are our recommended UHS-II memory card readers for the Canon R7, they are also backwards compatible with UHS-I cards.
Sony MRW-S1 UHS-II SD Memory Card Reader
The MRW-S1 card reader uses the USB 3.1 Gen 1 (5 Gb/s) bus to extract the maximum speed from the fastest UHS-II cards. Both Mac and Windows are supported and it is also backwards compatible with UHS-I memory cards.
Kingston Mobilelite Plus SD Card Reader
The Kingston Mobilelite Plus SD Card Reader also supports USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5 Gb/s) just like the Sony reader. Both Windows and Mac are supported and it’s also backwards compatible with the slower UHS-I SD cards.
Apple USB Type-C to SD Card Reader
The Apple USB Type-C to SD Card Reader supports USB 3.1 / 3.2 Gen 1 (5 Gb/s) and is compatible with a variety of notebooks and third-generation iPad Pros. It’s also backwards compatible with UHS-I SD cards.
Batteries
The official battery for the Canon R7 is the Canon LP-E6NH Lithium-Ion Battery (7.2V, 2130mAh). You should receive one of these in the box providing you purchase your R7 from new.
The Canon LP-E6N and LP-E6 batteries are also supported. However, only the LP-E6NH and LP-E6N support charging over USB.
The LP-E6 or other unauthenticated third-party batteries do not support charging over USB when inside the R7.
Canon LP-E6NH
The Canon LP-E6NH Lithium-Ion Battery (7.2V, 2130mAh) is the battery that’s included with the R7 when purchased from new.
This is the battery that I would recommend purchasing for use with the R7. You can also use this battery in the Canon R5, R5C, R6, and R mirrorless cameras.
This battery also supports in-camera charging via USB.
If you are shooting stills for an entire day then you will probably want at least 3 of these batteries, possibly more if you are shooting a lot of video.
Watson LP-E6NH
The Watson LP-E6NH is a third-party battery. I don’t typically recommend using third-party batteries in expensive camera like the R7, however Watson do have a very good reputation so if you must this is the battery that I would recommend.
Their LP-E6NH battery is known to work well in the Canon R5 and R6 mirrorless cameras, but so far it has not been tested in the R7.
So if you purchase this battery you are taking a slight risk until we know for sure that it works in the R7.

Battery Chargers
When you purchase the R7 from new then you should receive one Canon LC-E6 (US) / LC-E6E (Europe) battery charger in the box.
Sony is definitely being taught a lesson by Canon here since their $2,498.00 Sony a7 IV does not include a charger in the box! Thank you Canon! 🙂
Canon LC-E6 / LC-E6E Battery Charger
The Canon LC-E6 (US) / LC-E6E (Europe) battery charger can be used to charge a single LP-E6NH, LP-E6N, LP-EL or LP-E6 battery.
It will take approximately 2 hours to fully charge one LP-E6NH battery.
Watson Mini Duo Charger
The Watson Mini Duo Charger supports simultaneous charging of two third-party LP-E6NH / LP-E6N / LP-E6 batteries via an included USB adapter. A full charge of two batteries will take approximately 5-6 hours.
It’s important to note that this charger does not support the charging of the official Canon LP-E6NH / LP-E6N / LP-E6 batteries, only third-party versions like Watson.
The LCD screen displays the charge status and the charger also includes built-in overcharge, short-circuit, and power surge protections.

USB Charging
You can charge the EOS R7 via USB but only with the Canon LP-E6NH and LP-E6N, since only these batteries support charging over USB.
Canon PD-E1 USB Power Adapter
The Canon PD-E1 USB Power Adapter is designed to charge LP-E6NH & LP-E6N batteries of the EOS R7 in-camera.
Multi-Function Shoe Cover
The Canon R7 features a new multi-function shoe. Since this shoe includes electrical contacts it’s important to ensure that you keep a cover in place when it’s not being used.
Canon ER-SC2 Multi-Function Shoe Cover
The ER-SC2 is designed to protect the Multi-Function Shoe on the Canon R7.
This helps to prevent foreign objects and water droplets from reaching the contact points which could possibly short the camera.
Once of these should be included with the R7 when purchased from new but I’d recommend carrying a couple because they are so easy to lose.

L-brackets & Grip Extensions
There are not many l-brackets or grip extensions designed specifically for the Canon R7 at present, apart from one from the Sunwayfoto PCL-R7.
Sunwayfoto PCL-R7
The Sunwayfoto PCL-R7 is CNC machined from aerospace-grade aluminum material. It features the Arca-Swiss standard dovetail structure that is compatible with tripod ballheads of many brands.
The design still allows full rotation of the R7’s LCD display screen and access to the battery compartment.
Two safety stop screws at the base help to prevent accidental dropping of the camera and an extra 1/4 mounting socket provides the option to add additional gear.

Cages
Currently only SmallRig has developed a cage for the R7 but we don’t expect it will take too long before we see cages from other brands too.

Neck & Wrist Straps
The Canon R7 does include the Canon ER-EOSR7 Strap in the box, however included camera straps are never the most comfortable and it’s one of the items in the box that I never use.
There are many much more comfortable camera straps on the market, but my personal favorite are the Peak Design Straps.
Peak Design Straps are extremely comfortable and it’s easy to swap them between camera’s with their convenient clip system.
Peak Design Slide & Slide Lite
The Peak Design Slide and Slide Lite can be worn as a sling, neck, or shoulder strap. The seatbelt-style nylon webbing has a smooth side that glides over clothing in sling mode and a grippy side that prevents slipping in shoulder mode.
The dual adjusters allow you to quickly adjust the length of the strap and Peak Designs Anchor system allows you to securely and quickly connect the strap to the R7.
The Slide measures 45 mm (1.8″) in width, has a max length of: 145 cm (57″) and a min length of: 99 cm (39″). Each Anchor holds over 200lbs (90kg).
The Slide Lite measures 32 mm (1.3″) in width, has a max length of: 145 cm (57″) and a min length of: 99 cm (39″). Each Anchor holds over 200lbs (90kg).
Both the Slide and Slide Lite are available in black, ash, midnight and sage colors.
The Slide Lite is my favorite of the slide straps and perfectly suited to mirrorless cameras like the EOS R7. I do also own the Slide but find it to be just a little too big.

Peak Design Cuff
Just like both the Slide and the Slide Lite, the Peak Design Cuff also makes use of Peak Design’s superb anchor system allowing you to quickly swap between both Slide and Cuff.
The cuff strap magnetically locks into place on your wrist. This takes a little while to get used to but once you do it’s very easy to put the cuff on, secure it and remove it again.
I have one of these for each of my cameras and I often prefer them over the neck strap, but there are still times when the neck strap is more comfortable.

Cases & Bags
Just like with camera straps, there are so many camera bags and cases on the market it’s very easy to become overwhelmed when you start looking for one.
I’m going to keep it simple here and just include some of the more popular choices.
For a larger selection of bags just head over to B&H Photo where they have an extensive collection.
MindShift Backlight 18L
Available in black or green, the MindShift Backlight 18L make for a great lightweight day pack.
I use this pack myself and don’t really have any complaints. It’s very comfortable and the included waterproof cover helps to keep my gear dry.
It is however missing a hydration compartment if this is important to you.
Key Features
- Available in both black and woodland green
- Back-panel access without taking the bag off
- Dedicated compartment fits up to a 13” laptop and full size tablet
- Front pockets totalling 5L
- Meets most international and US carry-on requirements

Tenba AXIS 24L Backpack
The Tenba AXIS 24L Backpack is a bag that has been sitting in my shopping kart for quite some time. If I didn’t already own the excellent MindShift Backlight 18L above then I would have purchased this already.
Key Features
- Adjustable to fit your height and comes with a removable hip belt.
- 3-point camera access system.
- Fits up to 17″ Macbook Pro.
- Waterproof hydrophobic exterior.
- MOLLE webbing allows limitless expandability with Tenba Tools, such as Lens Capsules, Battery Pouches and Memory Card Wallets.
More details and additional product photos can be found on Tenba’s website.
Lowepro Flipside 300 AW III
The Lowepro Flipside 300 AW III is now in its third design thanks to its popularity. It’s not a bag that I own myself but certainly wouldn’t hesitate to buy one based on its reviews.
Key Features
- Holds R7 and 3-4 lenses & accessories
- Fits a 13″ laptop & 10″ tablet
- Removable padded pocket insert
- Rear zipper opening for maximum security
- Water & wear resistant exterior
- Interior & exterior pockets & straps
- Adjustable contoured backpack straps
- Chest strap & removable waist belt
- All-weather rain cover
Lowepro ProTactic BP 450 AW II
With over 200 mostly positive reviews on B&H Photo it’s hard not to take a closer look at the Lowepro ProTactic BP 450 AW II.
Key Features
- Comfortably holds the R7 and 1-6 lenses and accessories
- Fits a 15″ Laptop
- Tripod attachment
- Built-In rain cover
- ActivZone system harness

Remote Controls
If you want to control your R7 remotely then you’ll be glad to know that you have a few options available to you.
Canon Camera Connect App
You won’t need to spend a single dollar or pound if you want to make use of Canon’s Camera Connect App. You will require version 2.9.10 or newer for support with the R7.
With the app installed you will be able to transfer and save camera images to your smartphone and also shoot remotely with a live view image on your smartphone.
Canon BR-E1 Wireless Remote Control
The Canon BR-E1 is a bluetooth remote that lets you remotely control your R7 from up to around 5 meters away.
It works in single shot mode, 2-second delay single shot, and movie mode), but unfortunately not in continuous shooting mode.
There’s a shutter release button on the remote along with focus and zoom controls.
Canon TC-80N3 Timer Remote Control
The Canon TC-80N3 allows you to accurately time exposures and shutter speed from 1 second to 99 hours, 59 minutes and 59 seconds, in one second increments.
There’s an LCD display and an 2.6 ft / 80 cm cable.
Please note that you will require the Canon RA-E3 Remote Controller Adapter in order to use the Canon TC-80N3 with the R7.

Canon RA-E3 Remote Controller Adapter
The Canon RA-E3 is an adapter that enables the use of remote control accessories like the Timer Remote Controller TC-80N3 with the R7 via its E3 (mini-jack).
Canon HG-100TBR Tripod Grip
The Canon HG-100TBR Tripod Grip features a rotating and tilting head that can be locked into different positions at given angles.
The tripod grip comes bundled with the Canon BR-E1 wireless remote control for controlling the R7’s shutter, zoom, movie recording and AF from up to 5 meters away.
Please note that it’s not recommended to use this grip when the total weight of the R7 including lens and accessories exceeds 1 kg (approx. 35.3 oz.) in weight.
Flashes & Triggers
If your scene requires more light and you wish to trigger this remotely then here are some of your choices.
There are many third-party flashes and triggers available, but I won’t add them here until I’m certain that they are working correctly and supported with the R7.
Canon lists the following flashes as supported with the R7:
Canon Speedlite (EL-1*, EL-100, 90EX, 220EX, 270EX, 270EX II, 320EX, 380EX, 420EX, 430EX, 430EX II, 430EX III 470EX-AI, 550EX, 580EX*, 580EX II*, 600EX*, 600EX-RT*, 600EX-II-RT*, Macro-Ring-Lite MR-14EX, Macro Ring Lite MR-14EX II, Macro Twin Lite MT-24EX, Macro Twin Lite MT-26EX-RT, Speedlite Transmitter ST-E2, Speedlite Transmitter ST-E3-RT*, Speedlite Transmitter ST-E3-RT V2*, Speedlite Transmitter ST- E10, Off-Camera Shoe Cord OC-E3*)
*Must use Multi-Function Shoe Adapter AD-E1 to retain weather sealing
Canon ST-E10 Speedlite Transmitter
The Canon ST-E10 Speedlite Transmitter is designed for the new multifunction shoe in cameras like the R7 from which it is also powered.
With the ability to control up to 15 Speedlites at up to 30 meters even outside. The 2.4 GHz radio frequency triggering operates reliably and supports wireless second-curtain sync and permits power levels down to 1/8192.
The ST-E10 is sealed against dust and moisture for the most challenging of shooting conditions.
The MENU button on the transmitter brings up the Speedlite settings menu on the R7’s LCD, allowing you to configure and adjust your settings quickly.
Canon AD-E1 Multi-function Shoe Adapter
The Canon AD-E1 Multi-function Shoe Adapter converts conventional hot-shoe Speedlites with a weather-sealed foot to Multi-function shoe cameras like the R7, whilst still maintaining dust and weather resistance.
Microphones
Although the R7 does include a microphone on-board, it’s certainly not something that you will want to use if you are serious about audio.
Thankfully there are plenty of external microphones that do deliver excellent quality audio, here are some that you might want to take a closer look at.
Canon Directional Stereo Microphone DM-E1D
The Canon DM-E1D Stereo Microphone slides onto the R7’s Multi-function hot shoe with no cables or batteries required for a reliable, digital connection.
The menu button on the mic brings up a menu on the R7 for making adjustments and changes to the settings.
The microphone offers three modes of directional pick-up, allowing you to switch between shotgun (monaural), 90° or 120° stereo for different sized spaces.

Rode VideoMic Pro R
If you don’t mind cables and replacing the battery now and again, then the Rode VideoMic Pro R which features Rycote’s Lyre suspension system to isolate your microphone from vibrations is a great option to consider.
It simply connects to the R7 using the 3.5mm mini plug and provides a dual mono signal.
A windshield is included to help reduce wind noise, however I struggled with fitting the shield to my own Rode Video Mic until I found the following very helpful video:

Rode Wireless Go II Single
The Rode Wireless GO II single can transmit crystal clear audio at up to 200m / 656 feet distance (line of sight) with 128-bit encryption. It also supports an additional transmitter so that it can be used by two people at the same time.
Its compact design offers a simple receiver and transmitter with microphone built in. You simply clip the transmitter-microphone to your subject then attach the receiver to the hotshoe of the R7 and then connect the short cable to the 3.5mm mic input.
The Wireless Go II also features on-board recording allowing you to record over 40 hours of audio to the internal memory.
The rechargeable battery will last up to around seven hours and both transmitter and receiver can be fully charged via USB-C in just two hours.
It also features a 3.5mm TRS powered port to support a lavalier microphone like the Rode Lavalier GO (B&H Photo).
I use the previous version of this microphone myself for recording YouTube videos. I prefer it to the shotgun microphones because there is very little reverb when using it indoors. I do use it together with the Rode Lavalier GO because I find it’s more comfortable when clipped to a shirt.
GPS Receivers
GPS receivers allow you to automatically add your location to your images and video as EXIF data whilst you shoot.
Canon GP-E2 GPS Receiver
The Canon GP-E2 GPS Receiver connects to the Canon EOS R7’s hotshoe to let you record your location information. This includes: longitude, latitude, elevation, direction, and Universal Coordinated Time (UTC). This information is then stored as EXIF information in your images.
Please note that the Canon Multi-Function Shoe Adapter AD-E1 (B&H Photo) is required to use the GP-E2 on the R7.
Lens Adapters
If you want to adapt your older EF and EF-S lenses or lenses from another mount type to the RF mount of the R7, then you’ll need to use a lens adapter.
Canon EF-Mount to RF-Mount Lens Adapters
Here are the official EF to RF lens adapters from Canon. These can be used to adapt both EF and EF-S lenses.

Nikon F-Mount to Canon RF-Mount
If you are a Nikon shooters moving over to Canon and would still like to use some of your old lenses, then thankfully Metabones makes an adapter for people just like you!
Metabones Nikon G Lens to Canon RF-mount Camera T Adapter
This adapter from Metabones will allow you to use your Nikon F-mount lenses on the RF-mount of the Canon R7.
The adapter has a flocked interior that helps to limit flaring and ghosting from reflections inside the adapter.
It also has a detachable Arca-type compatible tripod foot to make it easier for mounting your camera/lens to a compatible tripod.
It is important to note that automatic functions such as autofocus and electronic aperture control are not supported since there are no electronic contacts. So its full manual only I’m afraid which really takes away a lot of power from the R7.

Eyecups
You might find that the eyecup included with the R7 doesn’t block out as much light as you would like, or isn’t particularly comfortable when wearing glasses.
Unfortunately Canon does not offer a larger eyecup for the R7 like they do for the R3 at this time.
However, I don’t expect it will be a long wait before we see third-party eyecups from companies like Hoodman USA appearing on the market.
Cables
If you need to connect your R7 to your computer to transfer images or use it as a webcam, then you will need a cable that’s compatible with both the R7 and the port on your computer.
Canon IFC-100U Interface Cable
The Canon IFC-100U Interface Cable is a 39.4″ long cable designed for connecting the R7’s USB Type-C port to a device or computer with a USB Type-C port.

Replacement Parts
There are not all that many parts that you can replace yourself on the R7, but here are the ones that you can.
Canon R-F-5 Camera Body Cover Cap
The RF-5 Camera Body Cover Cap is a protective body cap for the R7 for use when your lens is not attached to the camera.
It helps to prevent dust from reaching the shutter and image sensor. One of these should be included with your R7 but you may want to carry a spare just in case.
Cleaning
If you are spending $1,499 on the Canon R7 then you’ll certainly want to keep it in the best possible condition.
There are a few cleaning accessories available that will make this job much easier.
Photographic Solutions Type 2 Sensor Swab Ultra (12-Pack, 17mm)
The Canon R7 has a 22.2 x 14.8 mm sensor, so the 17mm sensor swabs in this pack will work comfortable when cleaning from top to bottom.
When it comes to sensor cleaning less is more! Start with the lightest touch because this will typically remove 99% of dust particles and marks.
Giottos AA1900 Rocket Air Blaster Large
The Giottos rocket air blaster is really a must have cleaning tool for all photographers.
It’s very useful for blowing dust off the sensor, camera body, lenses and filters.
There are many other air blasters available but this is one of the most popular with photographers and myself.
Zeiss Cleaning Wipes
There are lots of wipes on the market but it’s hard to go wrong with these ones from Zeiss.
They are not only useful for cleaning your R7, lenses and filters, but also for cleaning glasses, mobile devices and laptop screens.
I even use them to clean my sons fingerprints of our 65″ TV screen!
MagicFiber Microfiber Cleaning Cloths
These microfiber cleaning cloths are great for using after the Zeiss lens wipes to make sure that your gear is truly spotless.
And that’s all for now.
Hopefully you have found this guide helpful.

Shame there’s not a battery grip, other than that the R7 is an excellent upgrade from a 7D or 7D2
Timothy Mayo
They definitely need an official battery grip for the R7. If you are on Facebook then a few members of our R7 Group have modified other Canon grips to fit the R7. You should be able to view the posts here.

Buenas noches un favor puedo ponerle el tiwn flash yongnuo a la R7
Craig McCarthy
I just purchased the Sunwayfoto PCL-R7, it’s not really compatible with the R7 as it doesn’t allow full unobstructed rotation of the screen. I have photos if you’re interested to see.
Timothy Mayo
That’s frustrating! Thanks for letting us know Craig. Yes if you could send us a photo that would be great, then we could add these to the article and let people make up their own mind if it will still work for them or not. You can send it to forums@rfshooters.com. Thank you!
Erik B.
Canon’s product manual for EOS R7 says specifically that it’s not compatible with the GPS-E2. Have you confirmed that it works with that GPS?
https://cam.start.canon/en/C005/manual/html/UG-01_Preparations_0090.html
Thanks!
Timothy Mayo
Hi Erik. The GP-E2 GPS is compatible with the R7, however it does require the use of the Canon Multi-Function Shoe Adapter AD-E1 which we did unfortunately miss from our guide (it’s noted in the manual you linked to). I’ve added that now to avoid any confusion so many thanks for catching that! All the best, Tim
