Canon has announced their latest RF-mount camera and this time its the EOS R100, a 24MP APS-C sensor mirrorless camera with an MSRP of just $479.99 US for the body-only.

Alongside the R100 Canon also announced the RF 28mm F2.8 STM pancake prime lens with an MSRP of $299.99 US.

In order to achieve such an attractive starting price it looks like Canon has borrowed the 24MP APS-C sensor and Digic 8 processor from 2020’s EOS M50 Mark II along with the Canon LP-E17 battery from the M50.

The R100 is identical in size to the R50, at 116 x 86 x 69mm (4.5 x 3.4 x 27in), but weighing in at just 356g (12.5oz) makes this the lightest EOS R camera in Canon’s R Series lineup.

According to Canon the R100 is compatible with all RF (with 1.6x crop) and RF-S lenses, except for the Canon Control Ring Mount Adapter EF-EOS R, which will still act as an adapter but won’t allow users to use the control ring.

The R100 uses a single rear-curtain mechanical shutter. It’s capable of shooting at 3.5 fps (Servo AF) or 6.5 fps (One-Shot AF).

The OLED EVF features 2.36 million dots and the SD card slot only supports UHS-I cards, not the faster UHS-II cards, although with such a slow frame rate buffering is unlikely to be a major issue and this camera really isn’t designed to be a sports shooter.

The rear screen is fixed and it is not touch friendly like you’ll find on the R50. There’s a single command dial and the rear joystick has been omitted from this entry-level mode. There’s also no IBIS (In-Camera Body Image Stabilization).

To learn more about the R100 it’s worth taking a look at these videos from Canon.

Canon’s scene intelligent Auto (A+) and creative filter modes are present which allow users to apply effects such as black+white and tilt-shift. Human eye-detection autofocus is also supported along with face and body tracking, but there is no support for animal tracking.

Video support is 4K (cropped) and 1080p (full-width) at up to 24p and 60p. There’s also a feature called ‘Hybrid Auto mode’ that takes 2–4 seconds of video before a still shot and automatically places it into a time lapse video.

The R100 will start shipping in July 2023 at an MSRP of $479.99 body only, $599.99 with the RF-S 18-45mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM lens, or $829.99 with that lens plus an RF-S 55-210mm F5-7.1 IS STM lens.

With a diameter of 69mm and just 25mm in length, it’s safe to say that this is definitely a pancake lens. It also weighs just 120g (4.23 oz).

The lens has a maximum aperture of F2.8 and delivers up to 0.17x magnification at a minimum focusing distance of 0.23m (9 inches).

The lens is constructed of 8 elements, 6 groups and features 7 aperture blades. There’s a single control ring at the front of the lens and an MF/AF control switch.

An STM focus motor drives the autofocus and there’s a 55mm filter thread.

There’s no stabilization built into the lens itself but it shouldn’t be too much of an issue with such a wide-angle and if your camera body support IBIS then this will provide some useful stabilization.

To learn more about the RF 28mm F2.8 STM lens this video from Canon is worth a watch.

The RF 28mm F2.8 STM lens like the R100 should start shipping in July 2023 for an estimated retail price of $299.99.

About Timothy Mayo

I love shooting wildlife the most but will happily point my camera at pretty much anything. I started RFShooters.com with my amazing sister Emma to share our own adventure with the Canon R Series. At present I own the R5 + RF 100-500 lens. I also run a similar site for Sony Alpha Shooters and also shoot with a Sony A1. I find new camera technology fascinating so I unfortunately suffer from a very bad case of GAS! You can follow me on Instagram if you wish! Although I don’t post as often as I should.
