Thanks. That's the plan. Not doing a full series, just some 3 or 4-day impressions. I'm totally sold on the RF 100-500mm with the RF 1.4 Extender. I also plan to add some posed stargazer at the lower right corner. Will use a flash and angles to emulate reflected moonlight. Just for the fun of it. What I find interesting is these are shot in full color, not converted to greyscale.

That sounds so interesting. I recently got the 1.4 teleconverter and I have the 100 to 500. I am looking forward to trying some moon pictures myself this summer.

I would suggest that you get a geared tripod head for the camera as at 700mm it is much easier to adjust than a typical ball head. I actually purchased a Benro Geared head for work to precisely align the camera for a series of shots where the camera was positioned so the back was not accessible. I used the Canon Utility Remote Shooting mode to make adjustments and press the shutter. It works quite well for this. I think it will also work for extended range moon shots and long exposure where you want the camera to settle (no shake) before pressing the shutter. I don't use it all the time as the ball head is faster but when you need it, it is the tool for the job. ;)

Thank you so much for those recommendations. I haven’t heard of a geared head before. I will check it out. I have had some frustrations with my ball head, getting it to hold the position I want because of the weight of the camera and lens so it would be great to have something that works better.

It will not be a replacement for your ball head but for precise positioning such as "shooting the moon" or landscapes, or even real estate interiors, it can certainly be the right tool. (y)
