Just curious Timothy, did you use eye recognition or spot focus?
I used Spot AF to acquire focus on the bird then Eye AF to try and hit and track the eye. I have the shutter button setup for normal AF then the AF-ON is set to Eye AF as I find it works better. Going straight to Eye AF will hunt a lot and sometimes never find the bird when there are too many branches and leaves in the way.
