Grandaughter Graduation

Trying something I find challenging - pictures of people. I used eye detect auto focus, a tripod, a reflector. Maybe I should have turned off IS to get her picture sharper around her eyes.

An OCF would have helped with the bright backlighting, but it's a beautiful photo of your granddaughter anywyay. Congratulations on her graduation. You could still sharpen her eyes in post without it looking over-processed if you shot in raw.

Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge with me. I did shoot in RAW. What is an OCF? I haven't applied any sharpening at all yet. I will give that a try.

OCF = Off Camera Flash. The reflector helped, but a flash, like a speedlite, would have overpowered the bright background. There's a lot you can do in post though, since you shot in raw.

That said, I do so many "should haves" it's not funny and then regret not taking the time to set up. I get rushed, or just plain lazy. I'm working on it.

Thanks so much for your excellent advise. I don't have a lot of experience taking pictures of people mainly because my family don't like to get their pictures taken. I have to try more with flash.

LOL, my family is the same way. Even my dog runs when she sees the camera in my hands. There are many here with much more experienced than I. I still struggle with the mirrorless and getting TOO much light at times. There are a ton of Youtube covering the subject of one-flash photography, which keeps it really simple and inexpensive. You can do so much with the R5, you can get by with natural light most of the time, but sometimes even one off-camera flash will make a big difference.
