Quite a must-have
Pros
  • Image quality
  • Fast autofocus
  • Inexpensive
  • Low weight and good weight distribution
  • IS works superbly
Cons
  • Lacking water/dust sealing
  • Hood must be purchased seperately
There is a broad appeal to this lens: it is quite affordable, it has a long reach, and it produces very fine images.

Due to its low weight and good weight distribution, handling is superb: holding/carrying a R5 by its grip with an attached RF100-400 is no problem at all (especially when using a Peak Design clutch or similar).

Image quality (contrast, sharpness and color rendition) is very good, and for most situations, one would be hard pressed to find a fault in the resulting photos.

Admittedly this lens needs some light in order to shine - it would not be my first choice for shooting fast action indoors.

Totally agree! I use with a R6 and it is great to use on it. On the last comment in your post, I would just say that with the excellent solutions for dealing with noise, I am comfortable bumping up the ISO as needed which is a welcome advance over the last several years.
