Late afternoon face to face encounter with a grass snake, also known as water snake or ringed snake, a non-venomous snake often encountered in or near (standing or slowly flowing) waters in CH.

We were privileged to see Prairie Rattlesnakes in their den. To get this picture I had to stand on quite an incline on uneven ground just below the top of a coulee. Lighting was a challenge. No room for a tripod or monopod so it is handheld.

Intent on finding food. Not aggressive towards us. Preferred to get away from us.
