Official Canon Batteries
The official battery for the Canon R8 is the Canon LP-E17 Lithium-Ion Battery (7.2V, 1040 mAh).
Canon LP-E17
The Canon LP-E17 Lithium-Ion Battery (7.2V, 1040 mAh) is is included in the box when you purchase the R8 from new.
The LP-E17 is the same battery used by the Canon RP as well as cameras like the M6, M5 and M3 and the Rebel series.
This battery can be charged in-camera via USB but only when the R8 is powered off.
Depending on how long you plan to shoot for we would suggest packing at least 3 of these batteries in your gear back to get you through a full days shoot.
Official Canon Battery Chargers
The Canon R8 includes one LC-E17 (US) / LC-E17E (Europe) battery charger in the box when purchased from an official Canon retailer.
Canon LC-E17 / LC-E17E Battery Charger
The Canon LC-E17 (US) / LC-E17E (Europe) battery charger is used to charge a single Canon LP-E17 battery via mains power.
It will take approximately 2 hours to fully charge one Canon LP-E17 battery.
Third-Party Batteries
We only recommend using genuine Canon batteries to power your R8 because there is always a risk of camera damage when using third-party batteries.
You might also struggle to find third-party Canon LP-E17 batteries. We have seen batteries from Neewer and Wasabi in the past, but these appear to have been discontinued.
Third-Party Battery Chargers
Like with the batteries, we would recommend sticking with the official Canon battery chargers. That said, here are your third-party options if you don’t mind the risk.
Watson Mini Duo Charger
The Watson Mini Duo Charger supports simultaneous charing of two Canon LP-E17 batteries via an included USB adapter.
Fully charging two Canon LP-E17 batteries takes approximately 5-6 hours.
On the charger you’ll find an LCD screen that displays the charge status. There’s also overcharge, short-circuit, and power surge protection built-in.

USB Charging
The Canon R8 does support USB charging providing you are using an official Canon LP-E17 battery.
Canon PD-E1 USB Power Adapter
The Canon USB Power Adapter PD-E1 can be used to charge the R8’s LP-E17 battery in-camera but only when the R8 is turned off.
If you power on the R8 then the PD-E1 will now power the camera but the battery will stop charging until the camera is powered off again.
Other USB chargers should also work but until we have tested them with the R8 they won’t be listed here.
Anker PowerPort III 65W Pod
The Anker PowerPort III 65W Pod will allow you to either charge the R8s LP-E17 battery when the R8 is turned off, or power the R8 when the camera is turned on.
I have tested this USB charger with the R8 and can confirm that it works perfectly for both charging and powering the R8, just not at the same time.

Anker PowerPort III Duo
The Anker PowerPort III Duo is a 40 watt charger that charges at a maximum of 20 watts per port and supports Power Delivery (PD).
This charger will only supply enough power to charge the battery in the R8 when the camera is switched off. With the camera turned on the battery will not charge and this charger will not provide enough power for the R8 to run without draining the battery.

USB Power Banks
USB power banks can be used to charge the R8’s battery when the camera is turned off. Some more powerful power banks that support power delivery of 45 watts and above can also be used to power the R8 when it’s turned on.
Anker PowerCore III Elite 26K 60W
The Anker PowerCore III Elite 26K 60W will allow you to charge the R8’s battery when the camera is switched off, or power the R8 when switched on.
I’ve tested this power bank with the R8 and can confirm that it works perfectly for both charging and powering the R8 but not at the same time. So if the camera is powered on it will run off the power bank but not add any additional charge to the battery until the camera is turned off.

Anker PowerCore+ 26800mAh PD 45W
The Anker PowerCore+ 26800mAh PD 45W will also allow you to either charge the R8’s battery when the camera is switched off, or power the R8 when the camera is switched on.
I’ve also tested this power bank with the R8 and can confirm that it works perfectly for both charging and powering the R8 but not at the same time.
If the R8 is powered on it will run off the power bank but not add any additional charge to the battery until the camera is turned off.

Anker PowerCore Slim 10000 PD
The Anker PowerCore Slim 10000 PD supports 20 watts power delivery via its USB-C port.
This can only be used to charge the R8’s battery in-camera when the R8 is switched off, it cannot be used to power the R8 when turned on.
I’ve tested this power bank with the R8 and can confirm it works to charge the R8’s battery when the camera is powered off, but it will not power the R8 when the camera is turned on so the battery will still drain.

Battery Grip
The Canon EOS R8 does not have an officially supported battery grip from Canon at this time.
If you don’t require the additional battery capacity but would like to extend the grip of the R8 to improve the ergonomics, then the Canon EG-E1 Extension Grip (B&H Photo) is supported. This is the same grip extension supported by the Canon EOS RP.

I just tested the Anker Charger USB C 736 and it works fine to rechange my CANON R8 (it is available on Amazon.it as “Anker Caricatore USB C 736 Charger, caricatore USB C da 100 W (Nano II 100 W), 3 porte” )

Thank you for letting us know! 🙂

Hi, is this powerbank ok for powering the R8 (not charging)
https://www.jupioshop.com/en/jupio-powervault-dslr-lp-e17-28-wh-3
It uses a dummy buttery for powering the camera, but the 28wh are enough for this through the battery compartment?
Thank you.
Timothy Mayo
We’ve not tested it so couldn’t confirm if it will work or not I’m afraid.

There is still plenty of Canon LP-E17 3rd party OEM batteries on eBay. I have not seen Wasabi lately.
