Yep, I've been avoiding flash as well, but reading about Hali's hummingbird workshop suggested that it's something I should probably also learn at some point.
I've seen lots of rigs that help you get great shots of various wildlife in not so authentic situations. I don't judge folks who do it, and I'm not familiar with Hali, but I've seen flash used with hummingbirds and plenty of other birds as well (Jan Wegener in particular). I understand why they do, particularly with the lighting conditions where they shoot. It's just not something I want to explore.
