Birds Rock Ptarmigan; Male; Interior Alaska.

It's breeding season for each of the three species of ptarmigan living in Alaska. During winter this rock ptarmigan eats the buds of dwarf birch, but once the snow begins to melt up in the high country they love to eat over-wintered blueberries. As you can see, this rock ptarmigan's winter-white feathers are stained from the juice of blueberries.

I'm quite slow to pick up on some of this posting stuff. I'll work on it.
