The first Fairey Gannet flew in 1949 and was an Anti Submarine warfare platform used by the British Fleet Air Arm. This particular aircraft, AEW 3 XP226, saw service from 1953 to 1978 and was acquired by the Newark Air Museum in 1982. It’s quite the beast up close with a wingspan of just over 54 ft and a height of nearly 14ft. With a pair of contra-rotating propellors, it was a very stable aircraft – useful given its purpose and the sophisticated radar and electronics kit it carried. Apparently, the museum have it on their list to restore after the Avro Shackleton.
