Outer moat
Outer moat
Huge 108 ton, single slab of rock, the Taiko-ishi 蛸石 (Drum Rock), also know as the "Octopus Rock" (notice what looks like an octopus head in the lower left corner), that was mined further to the west of Osaka Prefecture. It was transported to Osaka via the Seto Inland Sea on makeshift rafts, using huge miso vats for buoyancy. High school students are known to visit and touch the stone for luck with university entrance exams (it comes from a play on words, derived from the Japanese pronunciation of the word octopus).
