Spent a few days at Lake Livingston State Park which is about 90 miles northeast of Houston. We had hoped for some fall weather back when we booked the reservation but summer this year is refusing to go quietly and the afternoons were rather warm. Thankfully our RV has a good air conditioner! The park advertises that it has a bird blind for bird watching. When I visited it I found a small shack with a bench and window and a cleared area in front with some folksy bird feeders fashioned from logs and some dead trees with branches for the birds to land on.
Only thing missing was bird food. A lot of state parks have staff who maintain the feeders, especially during migration seasons but not here. So, I went to Walmart and got an assortment of seed and suet (they had 2 empty suet feeders available at the blind) and within an hour or so had birds to photograph. They had a water fountain feature but the pipes were broken so I just put seed in the trough.
No unusual sightings, just local birds like cardinals, woodpeckers and a few other species. After 2 days, the food was all gone and there were the signs of squirrels and racoons who must have come after dark. I guess all creatures need some treats from time to time.
When it got too warm outside I cooled off in the RV and edited images, my dog told me which ones she liked!
