Do you have and use hoods on all your lenses? Soft, hard, reversible, collapsable? Which lens would benefit the most-wide angle or zoom? I have never had one or used one. Searching the net gives me-always use one or don’t bother at all! Any input from people here would be greatly appreciated.

My Canon lenses have all come with their own hoods. I have taken that to mean Canon want me to use them, so I do most of the time for additional protection. I've never questioned the need, simply just done it.
I used hoods on everything. If it didn't come with a hood, I buy one for it. Preferably OEM or OEM design. Gotta protect the front element. Now, my exception is when I shoot my Tokina Opera in small indoor spaces. The hood on that is huge and I used a 1/4 BPM on it.

There are circumstances that a lens hood doesn't protect the lens and it still has to be sent out for repair. RF 100-500mm $900+ for repair.

@JackC, @THXGEEK trip and fall at near the top of Sabino Canyon. Self-extraction involved 45 minutes to the trailhead, an hour to the parking lot, 45 minutes to the Hospital, 6 hours in the Emergency Room: 6 stitches in the eyebrow and three in the knee.

If I can stop for a selfie...you know it couldn't have been too bad. 😎

I do remember you posting this incident a while back. Not a good day in southern AZ, but I hope that you healed well and the lens is working properly.

No helmet ... ehhh ... Hood for my lenses. They are bulky enough w/o the hood.

You were lucky, I've seen motorbike crashes with less injuries 🫢

All the best for you!

I own hoods for all my lenses, but I rarely use them. Hoods these days are too big. You could eat chowder out of most of my hoods. If they were orange, you could one as a traffic cone, except they aren't flat on the big end. That would make them way too easy to store.

I shoot out of shoulder bags and hoods take up too much room. I use UV filters for lens protection. They're nearly as good for taking edge blows as a hood. They'll break when they're hit, but that's their job, absorb the blow.

Hoods are better protection but they're too big.

Ever since I scratched a lens many many moons ago I always use the lens hoods - did just have a 'giggle' and look at the price for a spare for the RF 100-300. . . . . . £739.99. . . . . . seriously ;-0

I was always advised that a lens hood reduced or eliminated flare so I almost always use one. For lenses that Canon do not provide one I refuse to pay silly prices for Canon originals. There are decent 3rd party ones available for around £15-20 - JJC have been OK.

If you're relying on a lens hood to fight flare, you're setting yourself up for a tough shot no matter what. You're already in a battle with the light. The best tool you have for fighting flare is your feet. Move your feet to look for another angle or some shade to stand in where you don't get flare.

In the rare situations where changing up your shot is impossible, a hat or a free hand can shade the lens in a pinch.

I never use a lens without one. Good to protect the front element if you don't use filters (always have a UV fitted). Two of my lenses don't have original Canon lens hoods but I find the 3rd party ones I have do exactly what it says on the tin. Some of the RF lenses don't ship with a lens hood so I have bought 3rd party ones.

No so rare in my experience, ShipleyNW. Particularly when moving the feet will also lose the shot. Thankfully there are many more shots to be had along with many more sunrises, hey! I too appreciate your comment.

Yeah, sometimes the shot -- the subject and the composition and the moment -- is important enough or fleeting enough that you'll fight the light for that shot. You just do what you can and get what you get. But most of the time you can find options that will get you an equivalent shot with some friendlier light, which makes for a better picture almost all of the time.

None of my lenses have come with a hood and I was just wondering if most people on here have and use them. I think I might pick up a couple for the lenses I use the most. Thank all for your replies.

I have and use the Canon OEM hoods for my RF 24-70mm f2.8, RF70-200mm f2.8, RF 100-500 f4.5-7.1, and a third party hood for my RF 85mm f2. I also use the OEM hood for my Laowa Argus 35mm f0.95.

I don't own any hoods for my Sirui anamorphic lenses, but you're also usually looking for cool flares with those lenses.

THe primary purpose of the lense hood is to reduce flaring from peripheral lighting. Protecting the front of the lens from minor dings is just a convenient side benefit.

I generally use a lens hood on all of my lenses when possible. I prefer not putting filters like UV filters on the front of my glass so the lens hood serves as a good way to protect the lens against most normal bumps and bruises. I know it’s not fool proof, but it served me well so far.
If a lens does not come with a lens hood, I usually will buy one, but it’s usually an aftermarket hood because Canon hoods are just overpriced in my opinion.
I recently bought a Canon RF 45 mm F1.2 and it did not come with a lens. For the time being I am not using a hood with it because Canon wants too much in my opinion for the hood. I’m hoping that eventually, one of the third-party vendors will come out with a cheaper option.
