Then there's the "plastic" stuff (as seen on the Olympics).

Superficially I'm looking at the photos and seeing (seemingly) perfectly good cracks where gear could be placed, rather than drilling and bolting the rock.

(There's places in the UK where even placing gear is more than frowned upon. Either solo or top-rope. e.g. https://www.southernsandstoneclimbs.co.uk/p/code-of-practice.html)
