I was a pretty serious fly fisherman for 25 years. I fished all over the mountain west, but my home water was the Yakima river. I probably pulled two or three thousand trout out of the Yak (and put them back.) I fished on foot; wading in the river and scrambling up the banks through the vegetation and along the train tracks that hug the river.
Fall was my favorite season on the Yak. The air is crisp, the flows are low, the trout are fattening up for winter, and the canyon gets golden.
I got too old to walk on slippery rocks, so I turned in my waders and picked up photography as my main hobby. A couple of days ago I stomped around on the banks of the Yakima in the fall for old-times sake.
