Quite a must-have
Pros
  • Image quality
  • Fast autofocus
  • Inexpensive
  • Low weight and good weight distribution
  • IS works superbly
Cons
  • Lacking water/dust sealing
  • Hood must be purchased seperately
There is a broad appeal to this lens: it is quite affordable, it has a long reach, and it produces very fine images.

Due to its low weight and good weight distribution, handling is superb: holding/carrying a R5 by its grip with an attached RF100-400 is no problem at all (especially when using a Peak Design clutch or similar).

Image quality (contrast, sharpness and color rendition) is very good, and for most situations, one would be hard pressed to find a fault in the resulting photos.

Admittedly this lens needs some light in order to shine - it would not be my first choice for shooting fast action indoors.

Totally agree! I use with a R6 and it is great to use on it. On the last comment in your post, I would just say that with the excellent solutions for dealing with noise, I am comfortable bumping up the ISO as needed which is a welcome advance over the last several years.
Light Affordable With Great Image Quality
Pros
  • Affordable
  • Great Image Quality
  • Light Weight
I purchased this lens over a year ago. Will never sell unless it is damaged and then I will just buy another.
Has great image quality relative to its price point. I have owned the 100-400 EF II which was a great performer but I much prefer the light weight of this lens. You need to look very hard to see any image quality difference. Easy to carry all day.
I use mostly for action photography, car and motor bike racing, focus is lightning quick and accurate.
Highly reccommend.

Nice Zoom Lens
Pros
  • Fast focusing - nano USM
  • Good image stabilzation
  • Inexpensive
  • Compatible with extenders
  • Light weight
Cons
  • Not as sharp as L lenses
  • Not the best in low light
I was going on vacation and had just bought my R6 and other lenses. I knew I would want a longer zoom lens, but I couldn't afford the 100-500 L lens. I could afford the 100-400mm IS USM lens, so I bought it. It turns out it was a good purchase. I have used it for whale watches, wildlife photography and even as a macro lens once. The pictures are good quality, it focuses very fast, and it doesn't feel too heavy around my neck. I have been able to crop the pictures to a moderate extent without much loss in sharpness even with the relatively smaller pixel count of the R6. It is compatible with the 1.4x, and 2.0x RF extenders. Overall, I have been pretty happy with it.

It isn't the greatest in low light. Below is a low light picture with it. The lack of smoothness in the bokeh is a giveaway that I had to use sharpening software to get the light coming through the ice as sharp as I wanted.

I had the Canon 100-400 ver II and just sold it- Purchased the new RF 100-400 it is a real pleasure to shoot with it- so much lighter and I really cannot see andydegrading with this lens- I know it is not weather sealed but then I'm not either!!
Affordable and Light in Weight!
Pros
  • Affordable
  • Light weight
  • Can hand hold easily
  • Decent portrait lens, too.
Cons
  • Not sealed - vulnerable to weather
  • Doesn't come with a lens hood - I purchased non-Canon hood, but I can't put lens cap on if it's on it.
My maiden experience with this lens was great! I took it to a pond where ducks and swans hang out. I was pleased with the ease of use - especially its light weight and the ability to use it with good results without a tripod. For the price, this is a great lens. The photos I'm submitting are all cropped.

Out of interest, does the sensor cover all the AF points when you look through the viewfinder or are you limited in any way. The 800mm fll just allows the middle block, about 25% of the screen.

I also have this RF100-400 lens and for the price, I find it amazing on both the R5 & R7.
