Zoom Canon RF 100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM

There is a broad appeal to this lens: it is quite affordable, it has a long reach, and it produces very fine images.

Due to its low weight and good weight distribution, handling is superb: holding/carrying a R5 by its grip with an attached RF100-400 is no problem at all (especially when using a Peak Design clutch or similar).

Image quality (contrast, sharpness and color rendition) is very good, and for most situations, one would be hard pressed to find a fault in the resulting photos.

Admittedly this lens needs some light in order to shine - it would not be my first choice for shooting fast action indoors.

I purchased this lens over a year ago. Will never sell unless it is damaged and then I will just buy another.
Has great image quality relative to its price point. I have owned the 100-400 EF II which was a great performer but I much prefer the light weight of this lens. You need to look very hard to see any image quality difference. Easy to carry all day.
I use mostly for action photography, car and motor bike racing, focus is lightning quick and accurate.

I was going on vacation and had just bought my R6 and other lenses. I knew I would want a longer zoom lens, but I couldn't afford the 100-500 L lens. I could afford the 100-400mm IS USM lens, so I bought it. It turns out it was a good purchase. I have used it for whale watches, wildlife photography and even as a macro lens once. The pictures are good quality, it focuses very fast, and it doesn't feel too heavy around my neck. I have been able to crop the pictures to a moderate extent without much loss in sharpness even with the relatively smaller pixel count of the R6. It is compatible with the 1.4x, and 2.0x RF extenders. Overall, I have been pretty happy with it.

It isn't the greatest in low light. Below is a low light picture with it. The lack of smoothness in the bokeh is a giveaway that I had to use sharpening software to get the light coming through the ice as sharp as I wanted.

My maiden experience with this lens was great! I took it to a pond where ducks and swans hang out. I was pleased with the ease of use - especially its light weight and the ability to use it with good results without a tripod. For the price, this is a great lens. The photos I'm submitting are all cropped.
