10 years ago.....yes I said it was a long story! Canon sent me an EF 50mm f1.2 for a lens evaluation. On my 5D Mark III it was rather amazing. A little soft at 1.2 but the pictures were stunning nonetheless. But I knew there was no legitimate reason in the world that I should get it, because I was a wildlife guy not a portrait guy. So I sent it back and moved on.
Fast forward to last black friday. In the USA the Rf 50mm f1.2 was listed as $1299 refurbished for a very short period of time at Canon Direct. So I decided why not. A few days later it arrived. All I can say is wow. Portraits of kids and grandkids with the R6ii were/are stellar. Court side at basketball games the F1.2 on the R7 was really good. The focus seemed a bit slow at home, but at the court it easily met the challenge.
All I can say is that I have and have had a lot of canon L lenses over the years and this one and the Rf70-200 f2.8 clearly lead the pack. I am a bit surprised about how well the R7 handles them, but not by the R6ii. The R6ii has yet to fail me on any lens.
Anyway if you ever wondered whether you should get the 50mm f1.2 and you can afford it. Just get it. There will be zero regrets. At least there were zero regrets with me, accept one. I wish I would have gotten it sooner!
For those who wonder how it compares to the Rf50 f1.8. The Rf 50mm f1.2 at 1.2 is about the same sharpness as the Rf 50mm f1.8 is when it is at 2.8.
