Portrait lens with macro
Pros
  • Close focusing, 0.5 macro
Cons
  • Slow focus
This is the first 85mm lens that I have owned. Previously I used the EF 50 f1.8 on my APSC cameras for this focal length, which I used a lot for portraits, so I was looking for a suitable alternative for FF.
The STM motor is a little slow & noisy when shooting stills (quiet when used for video) and can hunt sometimes in low light, but despite that this is a very nice portrait lens at a much cheaper price point than the RF85 f1.2 with the added bonus of close focusing & semi-macro capability. I use this extensively for portraits, where the focusing speed is not an issue and have been very pleased with the results. Is it worth upgrading from the EF 85 f1.8, probably not, but definetly worth considering if you you want a good native RF portrait lens at a reasonable price. IMG_6132.jpg

Quick comparison with 85/1.8 EF
Pros
  • Close focussing
Cons
  • Noisy, slow AF
I rented the RF 85/2 to test it against the 85/1.8 EF I already owned as I expected it to be better and just wanted to check before trading in the ageing EF lens. I'm glad I did as I was a little disappointed with the RF lens. Compared to the old lens, the 85 RF was slow and noisy to focus. Granted, it can get a lot closer than the EF lens, so that may be partly why the AF seemed slow as it had further to go. But it's also no smaller or lighter than the EF lens even including the adapter, and is a smidge slower at F2 as against F1.8. Results didn't look much different. The RF lens is perhaps a little sharper in the corners, but central sharpness showed no difference. It's no doubt a good lens if you don't have that focal length already covered, and the close focus would be a bonus. But I chose to save my money and keep my old stalwart EF lens instead.
