Relatively minor updates, bug fixes and 'performance enhancements' providing us with versions - PS 26.6, LrC 14.3 and Camera Raw 17.3.

(LrC - 'Select Landscape AI' detects things like mountains, water, vegetation and architecture and creates individual masks for each feature).

:)

In looking at the bug fixes it appears Adobe used a lousy AI tool for their Polish translations last time. LOL

Snarky comments aside, I downloaded the Lr/ACR updates and, WOW!! The Landscape (think natural backgrounds and landscapes) and People masking is amazing. I haven't used Lightroom as my primary editor for a while but got asked to do a "Tips and Tricks" workshop for my camera club last night and I was amazed when prepping to see how sophisticated some of the tools have become. And that was BEFORE this update (which I probably wouldn't categorize as "minor" ;) )!!

Definitely worth taking the time to download.

I've been using the people masking now and then as it was out for a while. I have yet to try out landscapes.

Talk-through masking demo by Julieanne Kost - click Here.

(Though not covered, I'd also recommend considering the - occasionally very useful - 'Intersect with' and 'sky - sky' masking techniques).

Speaking of Adobe.....

For those who have been complaining about slow response etc. in Adobe LrC:
I just up graded my box (i7 with 64 GB RAM) from a RTX 20-70 Super with 8GB VRAM GPU to a 5070 Ti Super with 16 GB VRAM GPU.
(Also required a new PSU to 850W)

Wow. What a speed difference.

That is excellent info. I’m a Mac user but have been making some suggestions as best I can to PC users.

Not doubting you, but I just did a complete review of Lightroom for my club and I never saw people masking. And this includes me having done a bunch of headshots at the beginning of the month.

I tried to find something more current. This two years old but will get you started.

Hi Jake,

Hours of fun awaits. You can also create Adaptive Presets using these mask options alongside various adjustments - potentially very useful if you regularly photograph the same person(s) and/ or apply common settings.

Almost makes me wish i shot landscapes :D
Yes as that is not my major interest as well. This month I was kinda hoping for the no DNG required Denoise process that ACR now has. You never know with Adobe. They do major updates year round. They released Denoise AI in April a few years back. Could come at any time. The sooner the better :)

Yep with the PC it's all about the VRAM. GPU before CPU. On my MBP M4 with the Pro 4 chip, I originally got it with 24GB Unified Memory. Ran some of my stress tests on it and returned it for 48GB UM. Mo Betta.

I've been thinking I underbought on my Macbook Pro M4 24GB. I hope not. too late to return and out of budget, What did your stress tests find?

I did find a bug in LRc 14.3 BOTH Mac and Win. You likley know that ALT (or Option) click on the Masking and Details sliders in Sharpeniong are very useful for selecting slider possitions. Well, detail now when Alt Clicked has very low contrast and barely shows any change as the slider moves. Not like that in 14.2.

Hi Bob,

I'd have thought you'd be absolutely fine running LrC with that configuration.

Have you tried running Activity Monitor with 'Memory' as the chosen option? (You'll find it in Applications/ Utilities).

This should show where you're at with LrC running - ideally you want 'memory pressure' to be green/ mostly green.

Phil

Thanks Phil.

I'm learning that Mac handles RAM very differently that Windows does. And if it is there, it will use it as what good is unused memory? So the fact my STATS app shows 100% GPU usage in UNIFIED RAM, a new concept for me, that is not necessarily a bad thing.

Activity Monitor takes uop too much real esate when using LRc. So right now looking for a small app to show pressure - also a new concept.

I found that when I ran a batch process in DxO PRaw in the background, whilst working on LrC and/or PS in the foreground, things were laggy. Also had a browser with about 10 tabs open. 48GB solved this.

That would be an expensive switch for mye right now. Would have to sell, but again. I'll have to see how much "only" 24 GB affects me. Thanks.

Hi Bob,

While Activity Monitor and similar apps are an interesting side-show, as RedCobra suggests the real test is how do things feel as you use them. My feeling is that, providing you're not doing lots of things at once, your set-up will be absolutely fine - LrC should run very smoothly.

IF you find things start stuttering, or lagging - or you're timing regular processing tasks with a calendar, have a look at Activity Monitor which may indicate the issue(s).

Until then, have fun... :)

One thing unified memory does for me. It's easier to make a decision because my memory is bad. :) I may have mentioned RAM is important. My 2024 MacBook Air has 24 and it performs great for a travel laptop. Cores are important as well. When I look into a Mac mini this fall I figure 32 GB RAM will be plenty for my the desktop but I will pay close attention to the amount of cores as well.
