Full Frame Been thinking about the RF 100-400.

I currently have a Sigma 150-600 Contemporary, which I adapt to my R5 with pretty good results. It’s great for times when I’m at a specific location and usually a monopod, but I’ve been thinking about getting the RF 100-400 as a lighter option to have when hiking with my wife.

I know it’s not a super bright lens, but have heard it has pretty good IQ. Seems like with the R5 there would be lots of room to crop when needed.

Just wondering if anyone here has that lens with an R5 and what your thoughts are?

I use It on an R with good results so would think would be good on an R5. Fairly sure I've ssen some on here with that combo. Certainly my lens of choice over the 100-500 when walking any distance.

Back in the day, I used an EF 100-400 with a 6D camera, and a Wimberley sidekick gimbal on a separate tripod. It was on ordeal to use and hand held shots were never a consideration.

After receiving the RF 100-400, I could believe how light it felt on my R8, and the initial hand held shots were sharp.

While not the best handheld shots, this recent chance encounter with two ducks was quickly captured hand held at 400mm. The duck in the water caught my eye, and seconds later I noticed the second one resting on land.

After capturing the images I stepped away as it wasn't my intent to disturb the duck. When looking back, the duck had put its head down to rest, so I felt better about this situation.

I recently traded my R5 but when I carried it the RF 100-400mm spent a lot of time on that body. Hiking and travel is where this lens really shines, it's an easy all day carry. I was concerned about the speed but so far it has been that big of a challenge. For it price point the IQ on this lens is pretty impressive.
