Raptors have three eyelids! They have a top and bottom eyelid plus a third, transparent eyelid which closes laterally across the eye. This special eyelid is called a nictitating membrane and is used to; keep the eyes moist, • protect the eyes during flight, and • protect the eyes when feeding themselves or their young
Great shot! We drove by one in Orange Beach/Gulf Shores Saturday evening -- if only I had had my camera and 100-500 lense with me! They never show up when I'm equipped.

Blind luck. I was driving somewhere else to take waterfall shots -which is why I had my camera. I spotted him sitting in a tree at a small pond by the roadside, evidently hogging down the last of a small fish. I pulled over, swapped the 85 for the 100-400 and set my exposure settings before I got out of the truck - figuring he wasn’t going to stick around when I got out. I took a few and he seemed nonplussed, so I tried getting closer - “Nope!”
