Posting this just in case others get this same behavior.

I was attempting to update my R5II to firmware 1.02. I copied the firmware to the CF Express card and had the SD card in the camera. The camera kept reporting that the firmware file on the card was older than the installed firmware (1.01). Spoke to Canon CPS who provided the solution of removing the SD card while updating the firmware. The rep said always remove the card not being used when updating the firmware. I've never had to before this update but will from this point forward.

I keep a seperate SD card which I format each time before loading firmware. Only put he SD card in and no CFExpress card. Also do not have a lens mounted and set to P Mode which Canon used to say do in the instructions. Not sure if that is still required. Firmware 1.0.2 loaded without problems.

Yes it is still required. Also many people forget the ACTUAL final step:

Fast, sharp, and lightweight! A great lens
This is my main workhorse of a lens and I love it. It's very light weight (only around 2.3 lbs) lens. I've been able to hand-hold it for an event...
