First time shooting Rodeo

I had no idea they had a rodeo in Southern Massachusetts, but they do, and it was fun. The light was tough, it didn't start until the sun was off the ring and by the time I left I was shooting at ISO 12,800. I have a lot to learn but I hope to go back and do it again. The R5 was great and got most of the focus right on even with a pretty shallow depth of field. Next time 70-200 f/2.8 instead of the 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 I don't need the reach. I even tried the new FV mode and that worked pretty well.

Great job for your first rodeo! Positioning is key, and you got it, especially with the barrel racing. As you go through your photos, look to see how many horses looked right at the camera. It's weird, but somehow they know. They're out there doing their thing, but they look for the camera, I swear, lol.

I think they were all looking at the official photographer! I didn't get any looking right at me, sadly. I'll have to go back and try again

I thought it was looking at the barrel ahead! Now I have to look at the rest of the shots!

Horses can't see ahead of them very well when they're moving fast. They have to stop and raise their head to see well straight forward, but they can see to the sides and somewhat behind while running. (Not straight behind.) More information than you ever wanted, I know, but given the structure of the horse's eye, I promise, it was looking right at you in the photo.
