Hello everybody,
My name is Chris and I am a new member. I have had numerous Canon SLR & DSLR cameras over the past 20 years. I do not have an R camera yet, but I am strongly considering the R6 MII. My current camera is a 5D MIII and have quite a few L lenses that I will be using initially with my R6. I have heard that the adapter rings do a great job utilizing the old glass with a new camera, anybody’s comments on that? I look forward to being part of this group and seeing what other people are doing!

Welcome Chris and thank you for joining up here and introducing yourself. I don't own any EF lenses so I can't comment on how well they work adapted other than most people seem to be pretty happy with adapting at least the Canon EF lenses. I think some third-party EF lenses can have issues, but a quick Google search on the particular lens should provide further details. Let me know if you have any questions about the forum here.

Welcome Chris! I have mainly EF L lenses and I used them on my R5 and R7. I have 2 canon adapters, one with the ring and the other is a plain adapter. I find that I seldom use the ring on the adapter. I frequently forget the ring is available, since I am so use to the buttons and dials from the 5DII and they are similar on the R5. The L lenses work great with the canon adapters and they are a tight fit.

Welcome Chris….I just have an R7 and a 5D4. I have found that version ii L glass seems to work good, if not better on my R7. Old EF-S glass or many older original L versions not so much. I have had great results with the EF100L 2.8 macro, EF35mm f2 IS USM, EF200mmL2.8 ii, 100-400Lii, and good results with the EF24-70L f4. The Rf24mm 1.8 IS STM is outstanding on the R7. Hope this helps.

Thanks Gary, that helps a lot! I also have the EF100 L 2.8 macro and the same 100-400 - both gerat lenses. I also have the EF 24-70 2.8L which I am hoping works well being that's a great walk around lens.

I have had an R5 since August 2020, and love it. However, about a month ago I bought the R6 Mk2 (for indoor sports photography). I'm blown away by it, from the speed of autofocus to the 40fps and the pre-shoot feature. I was a little concerned at first at the drop from 40 MP to 24.1, but it hasn't really impacted. But I would heartily recommend it!! I'm planning to get rid of my R5 body, and bite the bullet next year and get the R1, when it appears!!

As for old glass on new camera, I had a range of EF red ring lenses (as well as a Sigma 150-600) from my earlier Canon SLR cameras, and when I got my R5, bought an adapter. I very quickly bit the bullet, sold the EF lenses and replaced them with RF. The weight & size difference is dramatic (esp replacing the 150-600 sigma with the 100-500 RF, and the 70-200 f2.8 EF with the RF).

Image quality is excellent and the focusing seems to be faster. But basically, the ability to hand hold (all day) makes it a no brainer. The RF mount is here to stay for mirrorless Canons, so it's not like buying a body where there will be dramatic updates, the glass will last decades...
