At Home ~ End of the Day

For some people, end of the day means hanging up the toolbelt or apron, closing the laptop and such, for the commute home, dinner and relaxation.

Then there are other that mean, irrigating the fields, feeding the animals, and knowing there is still a few more hours of daylight before it's time to call it a day.

Went to a car show in my home town a couple weeks ago to shoot some of the cars. This one is my favorite from the day. The original full sized image is 2.34 Gigapixels. 41,905 x 55,874 pixels. 139 in, x 186 in. Shot with a R5, Rf 100-400mm f5.6-8 IS USM lens @ 200mm, ISO 100, f/11, 1/80th sec.

The finished image is made up of two sets of images, one shot with hood open and second with hood closed. Some 6,920 individual focus bracketed images were shot to create this image. These were focus stacked using Helicon Focus Pro to yield two sets of 117 focus stacked images. in a 9 x 13 array. These were then stitched using PTGui Pro. The two finished stitched images were imported into Photoshop and aligned to create the composite. I masked out the hood section of the second image to reveal the engine from the first image.

Earlier this year, I planted a small garden of Native Illinois Plants. Recently, the Butterfly Weed (Asclepias tuberosa) bloomed, rewarding me with vibrant orange colors. On one part of my property, there is an area roughly 1/4 of an acre that is difficult to mow. Based on the success of this small test plot, I plan to expand it into a larger pollinator garden. More color, less upkeep!

How's this? Taken in November of 2023, of a plant gone to seed, with my R7 and my EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM (since replaced by my Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN RF crop sensor lens). It's a deep crop, 1971x1839 pixels from the middle of the 6960 x 4640 pixel frame, edited in DxO PhotoLab.

Like the dandelion, this plant also spreads its seeds far and wide - but not on the wind but by hooking them into the fur of passing animals.

A 'Snowliage" photo taken in our back year. We had a Halloween snowstorm so we had snow and some colorful residual fall foliage. I took a bunch of photos and liked the vibrancy of the fall color with the snow

Well done and thank you to everyone who entered and voted in our competition this month. As usual there have been some really great entries.
  • 1st place with 11 votes was @AOC with a cracking capture of a local firework display with the Manassas Railway Station in the foreground.
  • 2nd place with 9 votes was @Nick L with a stunning shot of a garden dandelion captured in his macro studio. You should have saved that for this month Nick ;)
  • 3rd place with 7 votes was @MrSparks999 with the always beautiful little robin shot in his back garden.
The theme for our competition this month will be "Close-up / Macro" which will be starting shortly.
