Photograph it prior to full moon by at least a few day. Judging by the photos I see, there is more shadow detail in the craters prior to full moon, than actually during full moon.

I agree with the above concerning the waxing and waning moon being much more interesting yet to each their own. I have done a fair bit of moon shots with the 5D3 and the 100-400 x 1.4. I look forward to getting the 600 f/11 to go with my R6 too. Here's some from last year, various phases.

I use the Looney 11 rule with my R6 and Tamron 100-400 or 150-600 and the 1.4x extender. F/11, 1/200th of a second, 200 ISO.

The “looney 11 rule” says that for photos of the Moon's surface, set aperture to f/11 and shutter speed to the (reciprocal of the) ISO film speed (or ISO setting).” With ISO 100, you set the aperture to f/11 and the shutter speed to 1/100 or 1/125 second.
