Hi, It seems Canon has combined jpeg and Heif on the R6 ii ! Why and what's the point does anyone know? or am I missing something in the menus

Cliff.

Not sure how Canon has implemented, as I don’t have an R6ii but it makes sense to me. Heif is the future and JPEG the current, so it provides forward compatibility. My whole non-raw library is converted to heif, Apple’s Heic actually, for the huge space-saving, non-destructive benefits. The Finder on Mac does it automatically.

So, do we think the R6ii captures in HEIF and then converts to JPEG after editing? Its got me confused I can tell you, and I can't find anything on the web that explains it in layman's terms.

I don't have an R6ii but I would say that's what happens. Not sure about after editing, though - do you mean in-camera. HEIF is just so efficient and non-destructive, unlike jpg. The iPhone uses HEIF but, when sending to other devices (that may not support HEIF, it converts it to .jpg, for compatibility reasons. I'm sure you'll see HEIF increasingly in use but I wouldn't edit it instead of a raw or DNG. It's a great replacement for jpg, though.
