The Red-footed Booby was one of the open ocean birds I really wanted to get my lens on. We were about halfway between Samoa and Fiji and when I went up on deck around 10:15 and there were some Wagtails, and a couple Dark morph Red-footed Booby’s. They are beautiful and graceful birds as they skim above the waves hunting and diving for fish or running down the occasional flying fish

The smallest of the 6 Booby’s they nest in stress, and once the chick are ready for the world, they head out to the open ocean again. They range in a belt around the equatorial waters from the S tip of Florida to the N tip of Madagascar. While they nest on the Samoan Islands, I didn’t manage to see any on shore.

These birds were paralleling the ship then they would swing around to the Port side. This bird is just about to make a left turn. In most of the shots the camera locked onto the ocean just below the birds, but I got lucky with this shot as it locked onto the eye, and I could see the iris when I zoomed in.
