Lately, my focus has been roaming. Every time I get the focus squares on a subject, when I take my eye out of the frame and come back to it, the focus square is somewhere else. On the bottom, on the top, anywhere except where I had it. Is there a setting I'm missing. I've never had this problem with my other Canon's. Thanks.

Sorry for the double post. The system didn't recognize me at first.

I get that as well. I did a precursory looking at the instructions and couldn't find an answer, so I turned the feature off.

It might have something to do with my glasses or even my eye as I have a particular problem where I see double with my right eye.

It's so annoying to have the focus stuck in a corner. I can move it with my finger on the screen but it also takes a picture when I let go and then the focus snaps back to a corner

Hi Greg, Jeff,

There's a few things i can think of that may be moving your focus points. Switching Tracked subjects and Orientation linked AF point, on the Af4 menu;1 Initial Servo AF point, AF5 menu. "Nose control" aka Touch and drag AF settings on the AF1 menu. There are probably some others too that will contribute to the focus point moving when you didn't expect it to.

I can't remember if this is the default setting, but I have the Set button set to "Set AF point to center", so it's really simple to get a wandering focus point back to the middle of the frame again.

the "..but it also takes a picture..." is controlled by the Touch Shutter setting which is the first item on the Shoot7 menu. Set it to Disable, if you don't want to operate the shutter from the rear screen.

The active screen is really for capturing using the Led screen and not the view finder. Using the viewfinder to compose the capture, one will move the focus point with your nose. Best bet to open screen to side, compose with viewfinder and your nose wont touch screen and move your focus point or engauge the shutter. The led screen is very good now and it offers a new way to focus accuratly and compose without the viewfinder. You can capture high and low camera angles without looking through the viewfinder, something that was not possible with the stationary led screen. I have found this method to be very useful.

There's a good chance that you have the "Touch and Drag" feature enabled and you touch it with your face when you shoot. That's the feature that allows you to use the whole screen to move the focus point around. I am not a fan of it because I was having the trouble you had. There are many others who DO like it though.

Check the Autofocus tab 1 on the bottom. See if it is enabled. If it is, then just disable it. I think that will solve your problem.

I had/have the same problem. I say have/had because I can never be sure when it happens or how I cure it, I have been through the menus so many times and tweaked it so much I have lost count and what I've set. I don't have the screen facing me. In fact I rarely use the screen, I seem to use it more to drag the focus point to the centre of the screen. I cannot be sure but I think this problem started with firmware 1.3.1.

If you're using the eye piece to take your shots, rather than the back screen, turn the screen to the closed position, no way can you accidently move the focus point then. You can review the shot through the eye piece if you want to see the result.

This. If your nose gets too close to the rear screen when Touch shutter is set, you get a picture. and I also have the set button set to center the the AF point. I also have "switching tracked subjects initial priority" set to 0.
