So different from what I have here in small-town, USA where every street is is dominated by and designed for cars. There aren't street-side shops like in your photos. Thanks for sharing. It make me feel that our community, as wonderful as it is, may be missing something.

Indeed, Japanese cities, by and large, weren't designed with cars in mind, which does preserve many community-oriented spaces. Unfortunately, this can result in traffic nightmares, which you would think would result in discouraging the use of cars, but certainly not anywhere near enough. Even with big cities having amazing public transportation, people do love their cars.
