I am excited to be a part of this forum. Thank you for accepting me. I am in the market for a Canon setup. I have done a lot of studying (and viewing videos) on the subject. I will be buying an EOS R5. Lenses: I am likely to buy a RF100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM (especially for bird photos). The 800mm f11 was a candidate (because it is light and good quality), but I think the 100-500 might be more versatile. I may just start with the one lens for now, or I may add another one- perhaps the RF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM. This lens would be for more general use, and situations where weight is a factor. Another lens that seems interesting to me is the RF 28-70mm F2 L USM- but it is heavy.

Having said all this, I would appreciate suggestions!

Thanks in advance!

Most folks here who have it, are very happy with the RF24-240 as a general purpose lens. It is generally smaller than most of the L glass, and a whole lot cheaper. If you are just out and about with your camera and don't have a specific purpose in mind that would lead to another lens, it is a great choice to have handy. If you look through the Gallery here, you will see quite a few example photos from that lens.

I do a lot of wildlife and the longer range is a must. If you are only buying one lens I would go with the 100-500 over the 800. Just because it would at least give you some other shooting opportunities. Now having owned a few lens I'm really happy with my kit and have pretty much everything covered.

My favorites -
  • Sigma 150-600 EF + 1.4x (bought it before the 100-500 came out) - I will say it is a fantastic lens and even with the adapter it is half the price of the Canon RF 100-500
  • Canon 24-105 L4 RF - This is my general carry around lens and I have been using it for a long time (got it with my RP) it was my first RF lens
  • Canon 15-35 2.8 RF - I have only had this lens for a few weeks but is a keeper. covers a wide spectrum
Others I have -
  • Canon 50mm 1,8 RF - It is cheap and if you just need a lens for carry around town it is not bad (personally don't use it a lot)
  • Canon 35mm 1.8 Micro RF - Got it on sale, mostly used the Micro aspects, sometimes landscapes but now with the 15-35 I don't expect it will be used much
Anyway just my thoughts. I'm very happy with the 3 main lens I have now.

Thank you dmiller68! I really appreciate your response. I am leaning toward the 24-105 plus a super zoom...

I’ve ordered an R5 with 24-105L. I used to have a 5D3 with both 24-70 f2.8 and 24-105 f4 … but the 24-105 stayed on the camera most of the time … thus in changing to the R5 I knew which one would be the first and I think main lens to get!

I’ve been using a Panasonic G9 with Leica 12-60 and as that is an M43 sensor it is half that of full frame, thus effectively a 24-120. I found the range on that ideal for a carry round lens so am sure the 24-105L is the ideal lens for my R5.

Hello Lon, I too am a bird photographer and I have both the 100-500mm L lens and the 800mm lens. As crazy as it is I absolutely LOVE that darn inexpensive 800mm lens. Yeah, it can be limiting and isn't strong in low-light situations but I wouldn't be without it in my arsenal of lenses. If nothing else rent it for a few days to see how you feel about it. It's just joyful and I'm shocked at the clarity of it for just a lightweight, walkaround lens. But I must admit that I couldn't have a camera without a 24-105 lens. That's always the starting point for me because I do a bit of travel photography as well. It's just a great all-purpose lens so I would understand wanting to take the money for an 800 mm and put it towards the 24-105. I do also own the 28-70mm F2 L lens and the weight is a factor for me. It's a beautiful lens and takes great pictures but I think of it in terms of a specialty lens. For certain situations you are really glad you have it.
