Un-weather sealed lenses, lens coats, and related

Hello,

When using an unsealed lens, what environmental conditions would be cause for concern? Obviously, rain or sand storms. But what other conditions?
- A windy day at a sandy beach?
- Dust at a construction site?
- Smoke from a camp fire?
- Light snow fall?
- Other?

How effective are lens coats for weather sealing?

As to a Lens Coat, I'd think anything (water, sand, dust, monkey fling) that land on the coat and not on the lens is a positive. That being said, I think there is a lot to do with individual manufactures and their Quality and Features.

Even the best weather sealed lens can be damaged by the elements.

I've never been to an event where color bombs were used. After reading the Lens Rental piece, I'll make a point of avoid altogether. Unbelievable damage.

No pun intended but for my light exposure to the elements, I think a lens coat will work just fine for my camera and lens.
