Hey there! Going on a once-in-a-lifetime photo safari to Botswana. I have an R7 and have RF 100-400 and RF-S 18-150. Also have 16mm and 50mm but don't plan to rake those. I originally planned renting another R7 body so I can have both lenses to hand easily. Lately I think I have been over-thinking things (a life-long habit!) and worrying about lowlight issues that I may encounter. Drives/boats tend to be early morning and late afternoon. So I have been kicking around renting to try and...
Thread 'R1: 3 out of 5'
That's the score given by The Photographer to Canon R1. Here is the issue I have with this review: 1- The complain about AF failing to detect dark skin people. Contrast Detection and Low-Light Challenges Contrast-detection autofocus (CDAF) works by analyzing the difference in light intensity between adjacent pixels. It continuously adjusts the focus until it finds the point of highest contrast. However, in low-light environments, overall contrast is reduced, making it harder for the...
Thread 'File size sacrifice?'
So I am curious to get some suggestions for a small roadblock I am hitting. To get the quick questions out of the way Using R5mkii shooting in RAW always utilizing Lightroom mostly but also Photoshop when needed Let me quickly explain one of the things I do with my photography is I donate it to my states local motocross series. I used to race for many years and wanted to give back so I provide free photography for all the racers at every race. It is very important to me. That being said...
Well most likely Canon will come out with an improved R7 in the future, perhaps by the end of the year. Canon Rumors mentions it, I found the blog on the topic a bit more enlightening as far as guesses on what it will include. https://www.canonrumors.com/forum/threads/is-a-canon-eos-r7-mark-ii-coming-this-year-cr2.43271/
I'd love to see Canon come out with some fast wide angle L series prime lenses. Something like a 14mm or 16mm, even a 20mm would be nice. I know they make all kinds of L wide zooms but for me there is something old school that feels good with a good prime lens. Or at lease allow a 3rd party like Sigma to make some in the ART series. Anyone else?

Thread 'So is it an "opportunistic" shot or a "planned" one? 😜'
@ctitanic posed the question about "opportunistic" shooters and I need a ruling here. As I headed out the door yesterday, I just happened to notice a "treelet" in my side yard, in a sea of snow, with some soft shadows and I thought about going back in the house and grabbing the camera. That's "opportunistic", right? Then I decided to wait until later in the day, when the shadows were longer and more pronounced, which I did...so that's a "planned" shot....? Should I have taken both, just to...
Thread 'White balance/color correction'
I've been using my "-meh-" shots for editing practice - what I refer to as "polishing turds". The goal is not to "save" them, just to see if I can improve them. That way, if I ever get a good image, I'll know what to do with it! This one - and a series I took the same session - has been giving me fits. As shot, I got a weird bluish cast. If I get rid of that, I end up with nuclear greens and/or neon reds. I tried pulling saturation back a touch of both colors, which sort of works, but...
Got about half done then some help to finish tidy up. Wix reasonably easy that’s why I chose it. https://www.facethewindphotography.net/
This is a questions that I do not know how many times I see popping up. This time the question came in an article posted at The Photographer. According to Google AI: "Art is a creative expression that can be a physical object, experience, or skill. It can be beautiful, thought-provoking, or emotional. Art can be created through a variety of media, including painting, sculpture, music, dance, and photography." Google AI goes deeper by saying that photography is an art because: According...

Thread 'First day issues maybe'
Always used R6 or R6ii for equine but used second hand R5 yesterday sharp, easier cropping but eye tracking just not as good search for many things before locking on. Sometimes doesn't lock on at all. Same settings as R6 even tried R6 and locked on fine not sure what issue is will go through all settings. PS love the camera and output will work it out im sure and yes BBF
Thread 'Lightroom Classic v14.2 released...'
Lightroom Classic v14.2 - mainly 'performance improvements', 'bug fixes' and new lens support, though Adaptive Profiles (raw files), Focus Point Selection (when tethering) and Catalogue Back-up management options (via Preferences) are new features. Anthony Morganti goes through the changes on YouTube - click Here. (Camera Raw has also been updated to v17.2). Phil
In photography, an opportunistic shooter refers to a photographer who captures images spontaneously rather than planning shots in advance. They take advantage of unexpected moments, interesting lighting conditions, or fleeting subjects as they arise. This approach is common in wildlife, street, and documentary photography, where conditions change rapidly, and the best shots often come from being observant and ready rather than staging or anticipating specific scenes. For example, in bird...
Thread 'De-noise programmes'
I keep on hearing good things about DXO so I thought I'd give it a go using a free trial for 14 days. I already have Topaz Photo AI and online subscriptions to Photoshop and Lightroom. I have used Photoshop for many years but I'm a dabbler and have never had a lesson on how to use it, I haven't even bothered following the demos that are provided free either. Typical bloke I don't "do" instructions unless it's the last chance saloon and I'm stuck. Lightroom I have always been confused by so...

Thread 'Photo backpack items?'
So the biz is moving in the right direction; business cards will be here next week, analytics are heading in the right direction and I did a family shoot last weekend. They bought the entire album for a nice profit, so that’s a great start! I’ve been trying to figure out what I need on hand vs nearby vs back in the vehicle. Considering most of my shoots are family oriented and outdoors, walking a trail or a bridge or something, I’m leaning towards a simple Lowepro backpack. Question then...
Thread 'Got a deal on a Canon R that needs some clean up!'
I think with a little work I can get this Canon R and 24-105 lens back into shape.
This may be of interest to Canon shooters. Rudy Winston in coming back to Canon! Rudy is an amazing guy who has really helped me understand some of the more intricate features of my Canon cameras. I was really bummed out when he left. I'm glad to see him coming back (and look forward to some of his YouTube stuff!) Any other Rudy fans here? https://petapixel.com/2024/12/05/canon-brings-back-beloved-camera-expert-rudy-winston/
