Canon Rumors forum

I didn't frequent Canon Rumors forum very often, but I did enjoy interacting about certain rumors being discussed. I was disheartened to find that, since July, they have shut down their discussion forum with scant explanation as to why. Call me old fashioned, but I find that a poor way to treat members who have supported a site for years. I also find that you can't comment on their posts in Facebook either. Sad.
Oh, and they said that in the month of September they are deleting all the forum data. Again, no explanation.

I didn't experience it but apparently some were quite hostile towards the owner. Bases on some of the things I read I'd shut it down too. That would be the last thing I would need to deal with.

Not sure what this is about.

Yeah, I run a forum myself for over 25 years and it can sometimes be a pain dealing with the bad apples. My forum is not photography related, but I still run into many of the same issues.

This is what the internet was designed for. To argue with people you don't know and show pictures of your cats. That one is not mine. I read it somewhere and thought it was funny.

The owner of Photography On The Net eventually got worn out. There were good mods that kept things in check. Even with the help running is a site is a 24/7 venture. Good for you. I'm not sure I could do that.

Believe it or not I’ve had pretty good luck keeping the nastiness in check. I have a set of rules that people agree to in one of them is that there are no personal attacks and no inappropriate behavior in terms of language, etc. For the most part people adhere to those standards. Also, I absolutely 100% do not allow politics to be discussed on my forum. As long as you have a love of the topic of the forum that’s all that matters.

Pekka was a hard worker and nice guy who had to deal with some demanding members. Some of the mods were pretty tough and IMO overreacted at times.

Pekka managed very well with the pressures, but abruptly announced that the forum was closing. Its last day was Dec 31, 2023, and Pekka passed away on Sept 1, 2024.

I ran a forum for about 20 years and shut it down because it became to difficult to manage the abusive behavior that is what most forums have become. This is one of the few that I visit where the membership is always friendly.

DP review just started an upgrade to their forums and the hate in the open conversations is down right caustic and mean. People don't understand that things evolve and change for a business to flourish.

I'm happy to say my forum (going on 25 years) is pretty well-behaved. I have a lot of old guard members who help keep it that way.

Originally (before web forums) you just go to argue with people you don't know without the cat photos. This was on Usenet, now mostly moribund and only available as separate (chargeable) add-on whereas it was generally included with a lot of ISPs.

However I have actually met people from Usenet (well, one group anyway) in Real Life (tm). So I got to argue with people I did know.
