Feather and Edge controls in Lightroom Classic

So the new versions of LrC feature Edge and Feather controls to fine-tune selections. Sounds great, but where are those controls? I decided today to find them. I was successful, but it required several Web searches followed by about 20 minutes in ChatGPT.

After creating a mask, select its icon in the mask window at the top-right corner. Look for Feather and Edge sliders below the histogram on the right-hand side.

This doesn't always work, because it depends on mysterious factors having to do with the history of the edits.

They have had the function in ACR/PS for a while now and if I plan on doing any masking I start with the original image (CR3) and denoise even if it appears that it isn't required. This defines the image better which results in the feather and edge function having improved performance.

OK, thanks for the tip. Makes sense.

I'm not literate in Ps, that's why I welcome the feature in LrC. (I still use Ps, but as a beginner. I've been a beginner for 30 years.)

They are closely related after a month or so after a PS release. It seems unusual that Adobe doesn't roll out the functionality to both at the same time.

That seems pretty typical. New common features appear in ACR first, then PS, then LRC, then LR. I don't know what the rationale is, but that seems to be the way Adobe handles releases across platforms. I guess they could wait and roll out everything at once, but they'd need to modify every release to each product, so I guess they get the release solid in ACR, then port the feature to the other products as developers finish integrating each individual release. It's usually 3-4 weeks between product releases.

Good point Ken, It really is ACR and not PS. I run Win 11 and have all my photograph defaults set to PS and once PS launches they open in ACR automatically, at least CR3 and jpeg.
