Just received my new R5 yesterday from Canon and I am in the process of checking it out in case there's an issue with this build. One question I have for current owners, when turning the camera over while off I can hear something shift inside the camera. When turned on I hear something engage. Perhaps this is the built in stabilizer? I would like to know if this noise while off is normal for the R5 and would appreciate your comment.

I also would welcome suggestions on what to check based on past "build issues". One item will be operation with a 500mm zoom and auto focus acquisition/tracking of a moving target such as a bird. I rented an R5 for a week and was happy with it's performance but want to confirm the build on this one.

Yes, it's stabilization. What issues are you inquiring about? I'm a daily driver at Canon Rumors and no one is talking about build issues. Lots more users there than here. How has your experience been actually shooting?

No issues at all so far but I have not gone on an extensive shoot yet. The issue with autofocus was reported in this forum by an R5 owner. Canon said it was a motherboard issue. I believe the occurrence is small but since canon does not fully test out their lens and cameras after manufacture there will be some failures on a small percentage that leave the factory. That's why I check everything out within the 14 day return period.

I have found one issue that does not concern me much. I rented an R5 for a trip before I bought this R5. The CFexpress card I'm using in the new R5 still has the RAW pics from that trip. But when reviewing those pics in the new R5, half have crop bars even though all were taken Full. These crop bars did not exist on the rented R5. Canon thought I must have switched to 16x9 for the half that have the crop bars but I don't see this in the pic data. Pictures taken with the new R5 so far don't have the crop bars.

Im not a member of Canon rumours, though I think it was you that posted about the white thermometer. I’ve been looking into it since the weekends shooting. This is shown if the camera is getting hot and image quality of stills are likely to decline. The camera needs to be switched off to cool down. The red thermometer appears when shutdown is imminent. I have had a few issues last weekend with the widely reported camera locking up issue, locking up on three occasions in quick succession. I am assuming it’s because it was getting hot, though I cant say I noticed the thermometer. I was shooting at 20fps and maxing out the buffer for a while. I was using a sandisk extreme sd card.

I’ve now updated the firmware to 1.4. I’ll factory reset the camera then redo my preferences and I’ve an Integral CFE card on its way with a super fast write/read speed. I’ve a floodlit rugby match Thursday evening then 3 days motorsport. I’ll be glued to the viewfinder for the thermometer icon! If the camera continues to frequently exhibit the same problem Ill be very disappointed to say the least! It’s not something I would expect from a high end camera, especially after investing over £12k in a new system.

Hi Shotbycurtin, I also got the red camera and thermometer at a falconry centre a couple of weeks ago (on 1.3.1) using 20fps with an 128GB cinema integral card (no video at all!), I did not actually get shutdown but noticed a serious drop in fps, I was in bright sunlight and had the rear screen closed, I opened the screen and the card door when not shooting and the thermometer did disappear but came back, camera was not that hot so I will be interested if 1.4.0 makes any difference.

This is the extract from the manual regarding temperatures. It looks that the widely mentioned video overheating can apply to stills photography, hence the temperature warnings and inclusion in the manual. I’ve put the CFE card in and given it a bit of a go. With the integral card the camera certainly copes better with buffering. Got a flood lit rugby match Thursday evening so we’ll see how the camera copes with it. Fingers crossed all will be good, if not maybe it just isn’t the right tool for the job.

Camera was fine at the rugby match though I don’t use it heavily. Today at the race circuit it froze at least 6 times in quick succession Straight off the bat with no temperature warnings etc. Seemed to be linked to me changing the aperture or shutter speed. Did a quick reset and it seemed ok for short while I continued to use it, though I learnt after, only saving JPEG files.

As an aside, the integral CFE card reader does not seem to recognise the integral CFE card, so it’s going back. Ordered a Manfrotto card and sandisk reader to see if that sorts the card reading issue.

Gonna give it one more go tomorrow, if any issues come up I’ll record them on my phone then send the camera back for repair/replacement/refund. Cheesed off with it to say the least.

I rely on the Delkin Devices CFS cards and they perform flawlessly with no issues with the three different non-brand name readers I have used so I'm surprised at the issues quite a few are having. Surprisingly it seems to be with the name-brand cards. Puzzling.

I think it’s more than just a memory card issue tbh. The cameras packed up completely today, won’t even stay switched on, just flickers, freezes and locks up. Got an error message showing now.. “error 70” which tells you to take the batteries out and put them back in again. This doesn’t reset the camera any more now. Managing my emotions and being polite about it all, though it has totally peed me off.

Does sound serious, have you tried taking the battery and the cards out, cleaning the contacts on the lens and body then adding the battery only, then a card (and format it) if none of that works off to CPS is goes !!

Nope, not me

I was at the Bournemouth airshow yesterday and after a couple of hours I got the red temperature warning and the movie symbol. I switched off between planes and it went away. I also switched off the bluetooth and wireless (while not in use I did have them enabled) I then shot for another 3 hours with no issues, another R5 owner I was talking with thought I might have hot hands !!
