Made it out to Horseshoe Bend in Page, AZ for sunset. Using the little RF 16mm f/2.8. This was a three shot bracket processed in Affinity Photo. Tried to draw out the character without being too heavy handed with the HDR. The sky was pretty featureless that day and the wind kicked up a dusty haze. Did what I could with it.

It was interesting on the walk back because the “official” sunset time is later than when the sun disappears behind the mountains. The natural horizon being lower than that. So the sun was gone but it was still light enough. Heard a few comments from people hiking to the viewpoint wondering, “Why are they leaving now? The sun is just about to set!” Sorry. You already missed it.
 
Been out playing with the R7, RF100mm Macro, Godox V100 Flash and Cygnustech defuser, all hand held and stacked using Zerene Stacker (which I'm still getting to grips with) then processed in LRC. All captured in my back yard.
All very alive subjects. Apart from one which flew off to become a spiders snack.

The R7 setting 1st curtain Shutter, MF .
Goddox v100, manual, 28mm focal distance, 1/16 - 1/64 power

I've used Google to try and identify each moth as best I can.

Before I came to this site and started looking at all the bug pictures, I did not appreciate how hairy they all are.
Question for all the bug experts: Do the hairs act as some sort of sensors that would detect vibrations of approaching predators? Are they just ornamental to attract the ladies?
The camouflage value is another bonus for them as well. The Buff Tip Moth above looks to me just like the branch he is sitting on.

Those are spectacular photos Si, and thanks for posting them. We are lucky to have some folks on this site that post amazing photos of insects, birds, wildlife, flowers, and everything in the natural realm.

Camouflage is the primary purpose, in some cases. The buff-tip looks very much like a broken birch twig. https://www.ukmoths.org.uk/species/phalera-bucephala/ . I wouldn't think that is purely accidental; an example of evolution.

Other purpose of 'hairiness'. Warmth. Moths are mostly nocturnal. Some adults (imagos) only fly in the cooler months. Also think of how hairy bumblebees are. They are cold-adapted. (There are currently thoughts on climate change affecting them).

Some insects have hairs which protrude between the cells of their compound eyes (I've examples, but not captured with a R series body). It could be to stop 'stuff' getting in their eyes (much like our eyelashes). That's my speculation. It could also be detection of vibrations (like you said).

When it comes to the ladies, moths mostly(?) use pheramones. That's why a lot of them have complex antennae (to detect low concentrations of the pheramones they are 'sniffing' for).

Thanks for responding. I did not think about warmth. Makes sense. Sounds like you have studied up on bugs, and your knowledge is appreciated. There’s a lot more to them than meets the eye.

I haven’t had to use my pheromones for about 27 years now, and don’t even remember where I put them. Probably in a box in the garage. My sniffing antennas don’t work anymore, but that’s ok, I don’t need them and can’t remember how they work anyway.
