Canon RF 24mm f/1.8 Macro STM - Canon RF 35mm F/1.8 Macro STM
Pros
  • Lightweight
  • Great image quality
  • Excellent value for money
  • No hotspots for infrared photography
  • Accurate and fast autofocus
Cons
  • Slightly different lens mount to my other RF lenses
I purchased these two lenses for street photography for use with my Canon R5. They are light - unobtrusive and the image quality is excellent. Highly recommend these lenses for that and general purposes.

When mounting the lens to my Infrared converted EOS-R camera I found I could not attach it to the camera when I had my STC rear filters attached.

I found the reason to be that both these lenses have a protruding circular flange on the lens mount which causes the lens to snag on the locking slider of the filter that stands proud of the filter itself so the lens could not be turned to lock on.

This problem did not appear when using my other RF Lenses as their mount design does not have the flange.

I have gone to circular IR filters attached to the front of the lens.

So there are two slightly different RF lens mounts. Mostly this is not an issue.

To be fair STC do list their rear filters as incompatible with these lenses but I had not bothered to check.

From an Infrared point of view the lenses are great - no hotspots that I could discern and definitely not heavy. AF works as usual.

Care should be taken when buying these lenses if it is your intention to use rear filters.

Highly recommended lenses though. Great image quality at a reasonable price.

I agree. I purchased the 24mm version for my R7 as sort of a simple walk around lens. I found it excellent for most everything I use it for. It is extremely sharp with excellent image quality. Only seems to be soft at the edges at 1.8 which I kind of prefer. I still marvel how clean the 1.8 images are. Diffraction seems to start above F8 which is expected of a crop sensor. Excellent auto focus that is way faster than I expected from an STM lens. It feels well built and has image stabilization. I bought a JJC 3rd party lens hood which works well. My only knocks on it so far is that it is a tight fitting lens, prone to lens flare, and I am not a fan of the internal lens extension, albeit it very minor.

I am very satisfied with the lens and also highly recommend it.

I bought the JJC hood too but feel it too small to protect the lenses from glare.

Anyway I have managed to lose it!

I just picked up the 24mm f/1.8 for Astrophotography and I hope to test it on my R5. The first tine I installed it I noticed it felt different from my other 4 L-series lenses....almost like the tolerance has been reached....a bit tight.
