I learned this several years ago. Like most of us, I go to a lot of time and trouble to customize all my camera settings from customizing buttons and info screens to filling in my copyright info and how I like images named, etc. as well as the My Menu green screens. Before I package up a camera body, I take another camera or my phone and photograph every menu page on the rear LDC screen. I also scroll through the Customize Buttons settings and record how I have my camera set up.

The reason is, Canon or any other repair shop will do a factory reset so everything is back to the factory defaults. I get the body back and flip through the images up on my computer screen and make necessary changes to the settings on the camera. Right now I have 2 similar camera bodies, the R7 and the R6 MKII. For as much as possible I have every button set for the same customization and things like the My Menu screens synchronized as much as possible given one camera may not have every feature of a newer one. This makes it so much easier in the heat of the moment out in the field when you switch cameras.

Took me about an hour to reset my camera just now and double check the settings, attach my vertical grip and L bracket and my camera strap.

Easy peasy!

…I thought all that was accomplished by backing up your settings to an SD card?

In the yellow menu choose Save/load cam settings on card.

I suggest that the default file name be changed to today's date in the format YYYYmmDD. For example, settings saved on Christmas Day this year will be saved as 20251225.CSD. Make sure that this file is saved to your computer.

And one more tip: save your settings to card/computer whenever they are changed. The screenshot below, suggests that I practise what I preach!

Hi TwoWheeler,

This is only available with certain R System cameras, such as my R5 - Karen's R7 (sadly) doesn't have it and I believe it's the same for the R6xx series.

(Perhaps Canon will add it when they finally include Zebras for Stills... ).

That information comes as a shock. I cannot imagine using a camera whose settings cannot be saved.

I have been doing the with the iPhone for years. In the DLSR days you could copy your set up info to a card. Even then you may just transfer a previous issue when you install it. While a pain there is nothing like a clean install and then programming it.

I don't know about the other models, but on the R5 you can save camera setting to a memory card from Set UP 5 menu. It's outlined in the user guide (page 804 for the firmware 2.1 PDF file).

Now that you mention it that is correct. I had the R5 and I remember doing that. My R7 and R6II don’t offer it.

Yeah, same here, that’s why I asked the dumb question. That said, I have yet to back up the settings on my R5. 😱. It’s one of those things I keep thinking I ought to do, but manage to put off by saying “I’m not sure I have it set up exactly the way I want it, yet…” It’s been a couple of years now. 🙄
