Bulb Shooting

Gday had a session the other night with two seasoned pros one doing start trails other doing bit of all sorts of astrophotography.

Inspired me to have a go last night did a two hour exposure 2.8 iso 800 rf 24/70 L yep not ideal lens but what ive got at 24mm of course AWB auto

Should i be able to set up a "live view" and see image forming before my eyes in fold out screen? Currently black just shows time and timer word flashing to bottom left of screen

Oh and dont forget this is in begginers section where i happiest

I dont think the screen shows the image when the shutter is open regardless of what speed you are using.

OK thanks. There was a guy with me with a pentax and image happening before our eyes i thought it was cool feature. Wondered if r6 did it

I thought generally leaving the LCD on during long exposure was frowned upon due to the potential for additional stray light when you want it as dark as possible.

twice set bulb enable to 4 hours and twice it stopped at 99 minutes 59 seconds something not set correctly

Well, your "beginners" astro photos look great! Nice to have the mentorship of a couple of pros. I will be going to Molokai, Hawaii to visit my 87 year old mother next month. While there I will be under the mentorship of a good friend and avid Milky Way photographer who is also a member of this forum. Can't wait to get some great "beginner" shots like you!

also tried 30 second exposures 200 of them with 5 second interval that stopped at 99 minutes 59 seconds as well

Think I’ve worked it out. F2.8 iso 800 30 second exposure. The interval timer should be set on say 33 seconds? I had it on 3 seconds. Is that correct?

Serious BUG in my new R5. Unlike all my previous bodies (5DSR, 5D Mark IV, 7D Mark II) the built-in intervalometer DOES NOT TRIGGER the shutter, when the camera is set for Back-Button Focus. That is - Shutter Button Half-Press is set to "Metering Start".



The back LED actually looks like it's taking pictures - but it's not. You see "TIMER" flashing every "N" seconds, but all it's really doing is metering once every N seconds.



If I disable Back-Button Focus (set Shutter Button Half-Press to "Metering and AF Start") then the intervalometer works as expected. But like most serious photographers, I always have my Canon bodies configured for Back-Button Focus full time.

sorry for boring you with this topic couldnt work out why interval shooting wasnt functioning correctly. at least im not scared to post on rf shooters without fear of getting shot down by seasoned snarky pros. starry night tonight might see how i go
