Hi—I am trying to understand the odyssey that involves the new Canon EOS R5 II’s autofocus functions. Is it possible for anyone to “translate” this entry (especially the highlighted text). What is meant by “any other setting box other than [AF area] whole area tracking off [key icon]”? and I do not see how you choose this.

Thai, welcome to the RFS forum.

I’ll do a bit of reading and get back to you. The reading shouldn’t take too long, but understanding what Canon is ‘on about’ might be a challenge!

Please, let us know a bit about your subjects. (I often photograph birds, especially in flight.)

Canon menus are just dreadful. I came from Nikon and could navigate those with ease. With Canon I'm still calling my CPS rep to remember how to unbreak certain default settings (like images to the CFS card, video to the SD) when I get a new camera.

Essentially it's showing you how you can set your AF-ON button to do expanded area/Subject Tracking focus while retaining Single Point focus with the shutter button. What the highlighted section is showing you is how to get there, and telling you to choose Whole Area and then tick a starting point for where that focus will begin (I think).

Wildlife photographers use a variation of this that actually assigns both the AF-ON button and another button on the back so you can easily switch between Subject Detect (shutter), Single Point (helps to get to the subject when the camera doesn't find it on its own), and an area specific mode.

I don't have R5 mkII , so I can't directly help. If you continue to need help understanding the not so clear language in the Canon guide, I would suggest keeping an eye out for Nina Bailey's guide when it becomes available. I have her guide for the EOS R and it is wonderfully written and is much clearer than the Canon guide.

Good luck and welcome to the forum.

Very interesting. I use triple BBF. I guess I could set up quad BBF this way. My brain hurts now...thanks.

To put this discussion into context:
  1. The R5m2 comes with a printed Quick Start Guide.
  2. If that is insufficient there is a downloadable 1000+ page Advanced User Guide.
  3. The AF Setting Guide, which is referred to here, takes us beyond the advanced guide. Heady stuff!

What is shown in Thai's screenshot above (post #1) is part of just one of the five AF-combination methods that are explained in the ultra-advanced user guide to AF settings. Do we really need to go there?

Gosh dang, it’s gonna take you a year or three to figure out the nuances here and by then there will be a R5MkIII. On the other hand, I wish my R6II had example cases like this. I struggled like heck to get my customizations right, and I still get tripped up occasionally.

After playing with the R5MkII a few weeks ago, I’ve been lusting after one. I don’t know if I want to tackle the very uphill learning curve for another system change.

Thanks all for the comments. Specifically, can anyone explain what “key icon” refers to in the highlighted text I originally posted?

I haven't noticed much difference between the R5 and R5Mk2 when it comes to menus and settings. There again I keep things as simple as possible although I do go beyond the quick guide set up which basically tells you how to put a battery in the camera.

Hope I'm not off topic too much. I don't have the R5II but I did have the R51. I was watching this video and he covers the R5II and a few others. It may be helpful. I downloaded the R5 II manual because he said there is no more Switching Tracked Subjects. Good. Hope that carries over to future bodies/

Canon took the final Case number scenario types out. Only Auto and Manual now. Interesting including his suggestions. I'm pretty aggressive with Accel/Decel in case of speed changes but I'll try toning it down a bit. In 2009 I set Tracking Sensitivity to -2 on my 7D and have shot that way ever since.

I see they added Servo 1st Image Priority and One Shot Release back. Been many years since I've seen those.
