Not the best but a little story behind it - On holiday in Canada, driving along and out the corner of my eye spot something sat on a fir branch 'omg - it's a tiny owl'. . . . . no other cars about so stop, reverse back and pull off the road, jump out open boot (trunk for our American friends) open camera bag - put lens on - hoping it's still there - yes! take a shot. . . . few steps closer another. . . . closer still and. . . . . gone! Moral of the story - keep the camera set up on the back seat lol.

Nice shots and a great story. And a good reminder to always get a shot/look first, then work on getting close. had to double-check, but I’m pretty sure it’s a Boreal Owl. Northern Saw-whet has a dark bill and a more diffuse border around the face. A very nice find.

On closer inspection, I agree. Thanks.

Sunshine Beach looking towards Noosa Heads
Queensland : Location on Map (zoom as necessary)

This is the same location as the tiny tot surfing photo above. The differences, apart from the subject:
  • 150 mm; not 500 mm
    — the 'short end' seldom used by me
  • waves revealed for what they were
    — quite small; as was the surfer (post #29)
  • pointed north rather than east
    — early morning, so this was relevant!

Highlighting a different aspect of the RF 100-500mm... its surprising short minimum focal distance lets it be used as a pseudo-macro. All were taken handheld in windy conditions on the first day that I got the lens.

I was out shooting birds in a place called Alvor salt marches (Portugal) and it was slow. I noticed planes taking off and landing. I went back to the highway and worked my way to the airport. They were taking sky drivers up. At the marsh I heard this wine and I thought it might be fighter jets. At the airport I heard it again and looked up. This time I could see them. It was the chutes in the wind. They land back at the airport. I was in the wrong spot for them but I set myself up for the plane landing. I was using s slow shutter speed (1/125) for prop blur but was not ready for the people.

I’m going back and now I know where to stand for the parachuters so I’ll do both them and the plane again. I managed one shot but had to crop it a lot so it’s not that great. A bit of a double header. The R6II has a 24mp sensor but it can hold its own. Not a very usable but an example. I know I was little concerned with 24. My sweet spot was 30mp with my R.

Minimum post processing. Both camera and "lens" still surprise me.

I picked up this lens yesterday from our local camera shop in Pensacola. So far, I have been very pleased with the results.
